Engine id 75 ranchero

Ok i am new here. I just bought a 1975 ranchero today, the guy told me the engine was rebuilt and it is not stock from what i see it has a holley 4bbl and edelbrock intake. Here is the deal vin code is s which indicates 400 2v. The engine on my car has 4bbl heads because of the 4 on the corner of the valve cover surface, it has 8 valve cover bolts, the fuel pump is bolted in the 12 and 6 oclock positions. Is this a 351 cleveland and how can i find out what year?

.

remove the starter and get all the numbers.

look at the intake. a cleveland does not have any water passages.

Re: Engine id 75 ranchero

Sounds like you do have the 4bbl Cleveland heads which are interchangeable with those of the 351M/400's.
A quick way to determine whether or not you have a C or an M is to measure the distance between the top two bell-housing bolts. If it's about 5 inches, you have the small-block pattern of a 351C. If it's about 7 inches you have the big block pattern used on the 351M's and 400's. If someone retro-fit a 351C into your truck, they would also have had to change the transmission to make it fit. ( or at least the bell-housing it it had an FMX tranny.)

Yes. If your Squire came with a 400, it almost certainly had a c-6 or an FMX. The C-6 is all aluminum with an integral bell housing. FMX's are cast iron with a removable bell-housing so it can be fitted behind either a big or small-block.. I believe there are a very few small-block C-6's that came with high performance engines, like some 4-barrel Clevelands.
