1962 Ford Ranchero Steering Column Repair
Steering went out on my '62 Ranchero. I thought it was the gear box and proceeded to attempt to remove the box. After much wrenching (and swearing and crying) and googling, I learned that the gear box and steering column are all one piece. Okay, so now I've got the steering wheel off, the wiring disconnected, the clutch linkage disconnected and I have no idea where to go from here. I'm thinking it's actually the input shaft or rack box that needs to be replaced (before steering went out, there was a loud clicking noise that would come from what sounded like the upper steering column area every time I turned).
I thought once I got the wheel off and the floor panel piece removed, I'd be able able to pull the entire column, gearbox included, through the floor and lay the whole thing out. Not the case. The gearbox does not fit through the hole in the floor panel and the column itself will not detach from the gear box.
