Grinding Transmission

I just bought a 1964 Ranchero with the 170 engine, 3-speed column shift manual transmission. In 1, 2 and Reverse the transmission grinds. It runs quiet and smooth in 3rd. What do I need to do? How do I find out which transmission rebuild kit, if any, I need? I am no mechanic. My husband says it's my car so I am gathering info so he can fix it. I love the column shift so I want to keep it.

Re: Grinding Transmission

Sounds like just a stock rebuild, so I would just take it to AAMCO or a good local shop if I were you. Don't mess with any performance type upgrades. You don't need them and might cause more problems than they are worth.

No problem retaining the stock column shift.
