Correct eccentric

Hi

I have an 86 302 block with a 347 stroker kit. I have fitted an after market Lunati Cam. I want to fit a mechanical fuel pump and am unsure on a) what a fuel pump eccentric does (having never had a mechanical fuel pump before), and b) is this the correct one that I need (link below)?

Also, what is the difference between a one piece and a two piece eccentric (apart from the obvious!!!), and which one do I need?

Before we go any further, was there any direct instructions on the CAM TECH SHEET referring to what type of eccentric to use? You are also going to need a dowel pin and those are specific to the one piece and two piece eccentric. Do you have a mechanical fuel pump provision on your front cover?

The cam drive style and cam gear design is going to dictate the correct eccentric style.

The eccentric initiates the fuel pump fulcrum arm.

Here is some more info-

Camshaft Dowel Pin/Fuel Pump Eccentric

Two different length dowel pins were used in the front of the cams in 221-351W engines. In 1972 and earlier engines, a longer (1.375”) dowel pin was used so that it would extend through the one piece fuel pump eccentric used on these engines. The 1973 and later engines utilized a two piece fuel pump eccentric which required a shorter (1.125”) dowel pin. If no eccentric is used, a thicker than standard retaining washer must be used to make up for the thickness of the eccentric. The cam gear MUST be pulled tightly against the snout of the cam. If the gear is not tight against the step at the front of the cam the bolt will come loose and engine failure is sure to occur.



Dowel pin failure is fairly common in Small Block Ford engines. This is almost never the result of a defective or soft dowel pin. It is most often caused by the bolt in the center of the cam coming loose and allowing the dowel pin to be loaded and shear. The center bolt should always be torqued to the manufacturer’s specification and a suitable thread lock used to prevent the bolt from coming loose.

Thanks for that information.........I'm learning all the time!! I got two different length dowel's with the Cam (Lunati Voodoo). Will read instruction sheet when I get home but can't remember anything about the Eccentric.
I havn't got a front cover yet...............so I guess the next question is which one to get!!??

Comp cams kit #235 will have the correct 2 piece eccentric and dowel pin you need. Use the older style timing cover from a 289,302 or 351W

+1. You'll note the FMS catalog shows two 1-pece eccentrics. The difference is the metal they're made from. That difference is based on the metal your fuel pump arm is made of - stamped steel or cast iron. While the retaining bolt hole is different to match the original pump type - that doesn't apply to you or any that have had the pumps replaced. The easy choice is to use the 2-piece which works with either and has longer life to boot.

Hi, thanks for the information.

I have a Cloyes roller timing set. Will the two piece eccentric be OK with that? I spoke to Lunati (my Cam manufacturer) and they said I would be OK with the two piece with my Cam, but I forgot to ask them about the timing set, and I have read on the net that some timing sets can only use single piece eccentrics.

Yes , that comp cams kit #235 is the correct eccentric.

Not picking Kult, but that is good info for someone that ALREADY has one or the other styles of Eccentrics. He has NONE, so the choice is his as to which he wants to use. The 1 piece or the 2 piece, then choose the Timing set accordingly. M2C.

I swear I read where he has already bought the timing kit.

Now, the question is what cam gear was designed for which eccentric type.

Trying to prevent that time old honored tradition of clamping down on the front cover and she cracks or the dowel is incorrect.

Guess I will have to wait on my FMF FRONT CAM DRIVE CERTIFICATION also...

I will withhold future participation.

My mistake, Unless he has the HEX adjust timing set then the Comp cams 235 kit will work. No reason to get so upset.
