418w Crank Options

Already have Probe SRS forged pistons and Scat Pro Comp forged rods, now for the crank. I would like to hear your opinions on the following choices:

1. Scat
2. Eagle
3. Probe (RPM)
4. Star Galaxy Inc

All are forged Chinese pieces and comparably priced except for Star, which is about $100 cheaper. I would especially like to hear from anyone with personal experience, not just hear-say.

Thanks!

Re: 418w Crank Options

I run a SCAT forged 4.100 stroker in my 418".The machinest feels they are one of the best, final machining is done in Redondo Beach,CA..My crank is internally balanced,on its fourth season,no issues!!I run a Jerico 4-speed,5:14 gears,6200 shift points out the back at 7200. ROY.

Re: 418w Crank Options

Both my 393w and my current 427 use Scat cranks. Neither needed any additional work except for balancing with the other parts of the rotating assembly.

I would not purchase a unknown crank as it might be a nightmare to balance. Many people thought they were getting a deal with the Cat stuff but ended up paying more overall once the Mallory was installed.

Re: 418w Crank Options

Thanks guys, Scat is pretty much the way I was leaning. I have read numerous good things about the RPM cranks as well.

Re: 418w Crank Options

I have a neutral balanced RPM from Probe. Its been in my 418 since 05. I think its a good product based on how much abuse it has taken.

Re: 418w Crank Options

Alan: Did you have to do any additions machining to it? Where did you purchase it?

Re: 418w Crank Options

I purchased my complete rotating assembly from Coast High Performance. Other than balancing, no additional machining was necessary. Alan

Re: 418w Crank Options

Final decision: Ended up going with a 4.17" stroke instead. Got a great deal on Probe pistons and Scat rods for that stroke. Ordered a forged internal balance crank directly from RPM $663 shipped. Found out from Coast High Performance that they will no longer carry the 4.17" cranks, which were RPM brand. Scat doesn't make a 4.17 either. Guess they're not so popular. We'll see how the quality is when it gets here.
