New to the world of Strokers

Hey guys, I have a .040 over 351 with good pistons and stock rods. I would like to just buy a stroker crank, good idea or not? I was hoping to use my current pistons and rods. I do plan to spend my money on heads, AFR most likely. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I hoe to end up with a 450+ Hp daily driver turning low rpms not to exceed 5500 ish....

You can't just install a stroker crank and use the same stock rods and pstons. You need either a shorter rod and or piston with a revised pin location to get the correct overall deck height.

If you want to stroke your engine buy a complete kit that includes all three.

Also be aware that the block has to be ground for rod bolt clearance.

Great idea imo, and in your particular case, I would get a 418 kit, and as mentioned, you need crank, rods, and pistons.

AFR 195 heads with the first cam below with 1.7 rockers will get you there, but imo, in your particular case, you would be a little better off with a custom cam from Straub Technologies . . This likes at least 3.43 gears.

35-424-8 - Xtreme Energy? Retro-Fit, Hydraulic Roller Camshafts, For engines that DID NOT come from the factory with hydraulic roller cams, NOT FOR E.F.I.

For more rpm and power than you want, AFR 195 or 205 heads with the cam below and 1.6 rocker arms . . This likes at least 3.50 gears.

Howards Cams 22052510 for link bar lifters

You do not need a stroker kit to get 450HP from a 351W. If you are on a budget the New AFR 185 heads with the AirGap intake and a Anderson N-61 cam will get you there with a holley 750 carb. If you do go the Stroker route Ad Performance has a great rep. Stay with a Scat Cast crank, I beam rods and a good Forged Piston. Probe makes a great piston for the Money. cmefly, long time no see . . you should visit more often.

he wants 450 hp at a max of 5500 rpms which i think would be quite challenging to achieve from a 351 unless it was tested on a fairly "generous" dyno, and my guess is that he wants a torque monster.

Nice to see your still around. Yes you are correct, at that RPM a Stroker is going to be needed. It just seems pointless if 450HP is the goal. You could spin a 351W to 6,000 and make 450 +HP with the parts I recommended and it would probably have 435-450 ft lbs of Torque. Plenty for street use.

oh, yes, good to mention he can do it with a 351 and rpms are definitely fun!

Happy Thanksgiving
