Small Block Turbo Build
Good evening everyone! My name is Chris. A little about myself before I start my post. I am 23 years old. I’m currently on my second enlistment with the USMC as a V-22 avionics technician. I’m based out of Jacksonville, NC. I’ve been around cars most all my life. The hobby runs in the family. My first car was a 1968 Torino that I shoehorned a big block 460 into. It was a lot of fun and I learned the basics of assembling a car’s brakes, suspension, and steering components while working on it to get it roadworthy. I sold the car a couple years ago and purchased a procharged 2004 Mustang GT. That car was my all time favorite and was a real head turner. Super simple but one of the cleanest around my parts and everyone knew it around town. I just sold the car this month to get Rodney of a car payment and insurance payment in order to save some money while deployed till next summer to knock out some debt. Now here’s where the fun starts. When I return from deployment I’m going to be starting a project for myself and my son. He just turned one but this is going to be a slow progress build and I intend to ha e him under my wing for the build. The goal is a pro touring style early 60’s Ford with a small block turbo with a power goal of around 700-750hp at the tire. I want to do most all of the work from my garage, however I don’t really know where to start when looking into building an engine as far as what parts to buy to achieve my power goals. I get how an engine works internally, I just don’t know the specifics when it comes to measurements and other numerical values such as what parts will give you what compression, what is the cam lift and duration I would need, what style and size pistons I would need, what are the correct heads with the right valve train, blah blah. Can someone point me into the direction of where I should look to study up on these things? I want to avoid physically going to a shop and saying, “Hey, I wanna build a small block turbo stroker that makes 700hp. Here’s some money.” I wanna be able to buy by stuff, have a shop machine parts when necessary so I can bring it home and assemble it. Thanks in advance for any help y’all. Thanks for serving, Chris. I'll keep this short and to my point; which is to keep it basic and reliable. Bone-stock 351W junkyard engines have been pushed close to 1000hp on boost. Seriously. I'm not suggesting you do that, but the point there is that getting all exotic is not necessary or even wanted. I'd use the much stronger 351W block, and do a basic and solid 400-500hp street build with heads, cam and intake, paying attention to the importance of prep, blueprinting and boost-friendly parts selection for the purpose. Then add boost and let it do its thing. 850 at the crank on boost is an easy and good target for your RWHP goals. Want more power? Just add some octane and turn-up the pressureónot the RPM. You'll have far more work and expense building the car to handle and apply the power than actually building the power. Do some archive reading online at sites such as The Turbo Forums for examples that work.
