I have a 62 Meteor with a merc o matic. If I take off slow, the engine speeds up when shifting into 2nd. If I give it the gas or am going downhill slow, it shifts perfectly. Also if I'm going uphill slowly and let up on the gas, the engine speeds up when downshifting into 1st. Otherwise reverse is fine and it'll do 60 with no slipping or any noise, chattering, etc. I haven't had the pan off but the fluid is red and at the right level. Any tips are appreciated.

Thanks,
Ed Morris

Hello Ed,

Welcome to the forum. From your description, it sounds like you are describing a 1-2 flare which may or may not be normal depending on magnitude.

I offer the advice of my mentor Fred: "Do everything that should have been done 6 months ago and see if you still have the problem"

I am sure you realize that these old cars are miraculous in that they function as well as they due with no electronics. Fluid pressures, linkage adjustments, and vacuum modulator adjustments are all key.

I would check all vacuum lines and make sure everything is connected correctly. maybe replace the lines if they are old.

Go through the rigging procedure for the linkage and see if you still have the problem. If you caught me ten years ago I would have had a nice transmission for you :)

Best of luck
Thanks you for the info Burt. I didn't know what it does is called flaring. Good to know!

Ooh, I've never seen a S33. Very cool. I guess yours has bucket seats? Yeah a 260 would be nice and something besides a 2 speed transmission but I don't think my 221 has enough power for a 3 speed. Could you post a photo of your interior? I like yours. Just to know somebody out there has another one is cool. Yes I've gotten parts for mine knowing that the Fairlane is close. The doors parts are the same such as door seals, vent window seal, glass channels, windows sweeps and suspension and brakes, etc. Blessing to you and yours!

Oh man you have air conditioning. bucket seats, a console...that is cool. I think I've got the same issue with mine. oil pressure is not as good as when i bought it. I have a lifter tick when starting. it goes away but I probably need some work done. also cool that your grandfather bought yours new. I like yours. I certainly do....thanks!

No, and try finding tail lights! I think I bought the last one available on the internet.
I honestly would get some bulk gasket material and cut some by hand using a utility knife.
Maybe something like this would work better if you can find it in a small sheet.
THanks for replying 67drake. I'm thinking of getting adhesive rubber gasket and adhering it to the body. I got the bumper, the tail light assembly, c pillar pieces and trunk edge re-chromed. Just dressing it up a bit.
