[65 Galaxie 302]

Has anyone been able to order front and rear bench seat upholstery for a 1965 4-door sedan? I am not sure if a 2-door bench is the same in the 4-door or not. My car is officially a 1965 Ford Custom and not technically a Galaxie so I’m not sure if the seat covers would be the same. Here is a picture of my back seat as I am not sure if the “Galaxie” seats are different.

I assume you’ve already checked the catalog vendors (Autokrafters, Eckler’s, Dennis Carpenter…)

It does appear that, while they are similar, the 2-door and 4-door seatbacks are different. The 2-door version has a split down the center, and each one can be folded down separately. I guess it makes sense, as that would be how back-seat passengers would get in the car.

If you can’t find it, I’m sure the 2-door version could be joined together to make it work, but I’m guessing what you need is made.

I ordered my XL upholstery from these guys. They show 4-door sedan as an option for seat upholstery. They seem knowledgeable about them. You might give them a call. The upholstery is from Distinctive Industries (basically only available manufacturer).

I ordered stuff for my 7 Litre from them and had some custom touches added as well. Great company to deal with. Not sure if they’ll have what you need or not, but it’s worth the ask!

Putt, that's some nice custom upholstery...Did you sew the covers yourself? Those are clearly more rounded due to some bolstering from extra foam underneath. Those patterns are quite different than the stock '65 heat-embossed seats, however, so depending on how true-to-original a guy would want it, that type of work may or may not fit the bill. Those look right out of a restomod hot-rodder's magazine, and look very professionally done. I'll bet they're much more comfortable than stock seats. I've never done any custom stuff as a concours guy, but I understand that is a highly in-demand service that is getting harder and harder to find.

That’s what I was worried about. Since my interior came from a Custom the seats are different. Looks great! Good work

I had the bottom of the front seat redone in my Custom, but I just took the seat to the upholstery shop. They ordered the correct vinyl and stitched it, then installed it on the frame.
The upholstery shop will have all the order books for the colors you need. Do you have any part of your seats that are still intact ?

The rear seat is in tact original. The front bench back is original and in tact but the front bench bottom was completely stripped and I did a quick “fix” just so I could not sink in the drivers seat so the bottom has no original vinyl. I considered going to the antique auto salvage yard and pulling a front bottom seat so I can get the exact measurements and cuts of any new vinyl I buy.

So, reference the photo above. The back of the front seat and the bottom of the front seat vinyl are the same colors and same pattern. When I got the front seat bottom recovered at the upholstery shop, I just took the bottom frame and the back upholstered assembly to them. They were able to match the colors and pleats of the inserts perfectly. Then it is just a matter of measuring the length and width of the bottom seat frame and stitching up the vinyl. It will be obvious to the upholsterer where the side panels will meat the seat bottom and how to attach it. All around the upholstery, where it attaches to the frame, there is a continuous loop that a metal wire fits in. This is where the hog rings attach the upholstery to the seat frame.
