Does anyone know what vehicles the 428 was available in in 1970. I know the mustang had a Q and R code option. The reason I'm asking is I just bought a 1970 428cj engine that has a partial vin stamped in it. The first two digits are 0 Z. From what I've found this means 1970 and Z is the engine code. Z code for 70 mustang is boss 429. Any feed back would be appreciated. I've owned several FE engines but this is the first to have a vin stamped in it. Thanks

1970 FE 428 CJ/SCJ was only available in Mustangs and Cougars.
The bigger Fords/Mercs like Torino's, Cyclones, Ranchero's, and Fairlanes got the new 429 CJ/SCJ that was based on the 429/460 big block "385 Lima" series engines.

The 70 1/2 Falcon had a 428 SCJ Drag Pack . I looked at one in the mid 80s and didn't buy it because it was extremely rough, (from its original owner). A few years later, I found out how rare it was! The car was ordered with a 429 and when it arrived it was a 428

The 70 1/2 Falcon may have had the 428 in it, but I can guarantee you it did'nt come from the factory that way. Dealer swap maybe??
The 70 1/2 Falcon was the same chassis as the Torino, and they came with the 429 CJ's.

I've never seen or heard of a Police Interceptor with a 428 installed after 1969....not saying it dont exist, just that I've never seen or read about one.
Again, most Police Interceptors in 1970 and later would be 429 until 1972, then 460 from there on.

I thought the mustang was the only one to still use a 428 in 1970. The block is date coded april 20 1970. Maybe I'm not reading the vin satmping properly or it isn't even a vin. Oh well. Thanks anyway.

The portion of the vin that is stamped in the block (for example on Boss cars and Mach I's) is the last six numbers. Say if you had a Boss 302 with the VIN as follows 0FO2G116342, just the 116342 would be stamped on the block, if that helps.
