I am building a 1970 C4 (C10) transmission and I happen to have 2 valve bodies
One 1970 (not from the same tranny) and another from 1978

Only differences between the bodies what I noticed so far is that the 1978 got an extra bolt hole for installing to the case

But I also noticed that the separator plate got a different size in one of the holes for the case fluid
Se this picture

The 1978 body seams to be in a little better shape but I could switch parts between them

Do anyone here have some advice what I will use? :nerd:

The tranny is a higly modified C4 and the valve body will also get a Trans Go or B&M shift kit

I have a 65 Falcon with a C4. Years ago I had a shop rebuild it and put in racing bands and clutch plates. The guy working on it tossed my green dot valve body in the dumpster. I had a B&M shift kit in it too! He replaced it with a valve body from a 70 Maverick C4 and installed a Trans-Go kit. This changed it to crisper shifts and also gave me the ability to start out and hold it in first, or start out and hold it in second, or let the trans shift normally.

The smaller hole might be to restrict fluid. Do you know anything about the car it came out of? There were smog issues back then and Ford may have made changes to try to comply with government regulations. You could also contact a knowledgeable shop to see if they have any info about the valve bodies. Or if you have some extra time, peruse some motor manuals at a local library.

May find also different size 1-2 shift valves , there are 3 different sizes .. There is a few variations but in reality won't make a lot of difference. Use whichever is in the nicest condition

Heads up on the '70 valve body. There is a fairly rare FULL MANUAL valve body that came in "some" six cylinder Mavericks. It is a "forward" shift not reverse pattern. It was not meant to be a "race" valve body so the shifts are a little soggy unless the pressure regulator spring is changed. I had trouble with shift timing and went back to my Winters VB. I have only seen a couple of them in local wrecking yards . The indicator on the steering column says P R N 3 2 1. Not D for drive.

Bummer, it's all gone. I had posted a diagram and flowcharts on that factory manual version down the page here: C4 Info - Read First Unfortunately, I doubt my backup drives will go back 10 years!:frown:

I would use a 78 valve body just put a bolt in that extra hole I don't know if I swap parts or not and I hope you have better luck than I have I've been working on one for 6 months took it out and then 10 times I know still not working but working on it anyway I will let you know you can send it to performance automatic and they will go through the valve body for a hundred twenty bucks and by any other valve body you got for 40 bucks a pop that's what I have decided to do sale them 4 valve bodies and they fix my valve body
