Well, an update on the 445, made it breathe a little deeper

The build is a 10:1 445 FE, with ported D2TE-AA truck heads flowing about 280 cfm, CJ undercut stem valves, ported RPM intake, 3310 Holley, 1 inch spacer, Hedman headers, dual 3 inch mandrel bent exhaust

Originally I put it together with stock hyd 1.73 rockers, with good shafts and end stands, and a 270H cam retarded to 110 intake centerline to let it live with the 10:1 compression. (270 adv, 224 @ .050, .519 lift, 110 LSA on 110 ICL)

It ran very strong, but I had an odd noise after a while, turned out to be a cracked lifter, something I hadn't seen happen before. Basically the cam was fine, but the lifter had a crack which was bleeding oil and making it clack and the oddest times.

So, I could have added a lifter and drove off, but I had it all apart and decided to go with more cam.

I went with a custom solid flat tappet tight lash Bullet cam, 282 adv, 236 @ .050, .580 lift, 112 LSA on a 104 centerline. The logic was to add some lift and duration, but have a very similar intake closing point as the hyd cam to manage dynamic compression, then spread the centers to keep overlap in check. At the same time I changed to Erson roller rockers, 1.76 ratio with needle bearing fulcrum

I expected some change but not much, the dyno programs said gains everywhere, but they typically are all over the place. However it worked out great

Trying to get a video, but the exhaust tone sort of drowns out my cell phone. The bottom line though is it feels like it revs looser and quicker, and despite a larger cam, it pulls harder everywhere, even in 4th at idle and will bang 6000 rpm in a heartbeat

So, success! The truck is probably a little to fast for its drum brakes and big heavy tires now :) so next step is probably a set of good disks up front.

That is always great news. How many times do we spend money and actually go backwards. With 455" 's, i cant see the solid making less anywhere. Ive always been taught that when an engine is cylinder head limited, the cam shaft becomes even more important.

Did bullet pick that cam out for you? Ill be looking for a solid flat for my 427 soon.

No, I picked the lobes and the cam timing myself. Matter of fact, I calculated then verified the valve events based on different lash figures to get exactly the cam timing I wanted

I am pretty fussy, I have found the cam grinders hit general advice areas, not because they aren't knowledgeable, but more because they deal with such a wide range of people that it's easier to just get close enough.

So I tell them what I want exactly then verify

FWIW, there is more power in a narrow lobe separation, especially with smaller displacement, so although this is a great cam, there could be better depending on what you want it to do.

Well, I was bored yesterday and came up with a few videos to update the F100 and decided to revive this post from the dead >:)

First video is the 8.5:1 396 FE with an SM, 750, no head work, headers, 270H and 3 inch duals, Flowmasters, and no crossover for reference. Ironically it sounds to be the meanest of the bunch, but wasmellow


Second video is the first one I made of the 445, 10:1 compression, ported D2s, ported RPM, 282/236 112/104 .580 lift Bullet SFT, 3310, mandrel bent 3 inch duals, X pipe, and Jones straight through mufflers (very much like a Magnaflow)

Third video is how it is now. No changes to the exhaust from above, but recently rocked the cam back a bit and lashed it much tighter, really liked it. Just idling here, but gets a good look at the truck. Sorry, time for a new cell phone, it just doesn't film very well


Decided to put it away for a bit and play with the Mustang, but next step for the truck is likely some rear suspension work, going to either 4 link it out back or adapt a more modern spring setup the allow a bit of squat. Right now the only flex with the HD Special springs comes from the sidewalls :)

At some point I'd like to swap to a transmission that I can shift quickly, right now its a NP435, but we'll see, no idea yet on that one. I'd really like a TKO, but need a mid-shift and a transfer case swap, not sure if I am going to do it or not
