Thanks in advance for any help with this. I recently purchased a 1976 Ranchero 500. Nice old car with 43000 miles on the clock. There have been a few minor issues, but overall a good driver. A couple of days ago, I tried to open the tailgate and it will not open. It had been working fine. I have looked and listened, but cannot figure out how to get the thing open....any ideas ?

Thanks

You can try a couple things. Take the back tail lights off to access the striker from the inside to make sure it is free and nothing is binding there. Also you can take the latch handle off by lifting it up and removing the two screws then you can check the rods and the connection. There are a couple cheap pieces holding the rods at each end and they can break off not allowing you to actually release the locks on either side.
