Hey guys, got a question to ask you about a used car for a friend of mine, don't know if we still have any dealer guys here, but...

My buddy is looking at buying a 1991 Ford Escort GT. It's a 5-speed, has the Mazda engine and new timing belt and tires. Ask price is right at bluebook at 1,200.

From what I've been able to tell, the Escorts are good cars, but I figured I'd get some free collective real-world knowledge if it's available.

Is it a decent car? Reliable? Any quality issues or recalls I should help him look out for?

He's been looking for a while (he's been borrowing the parents car, so he hasn't had much incentive to find one) and this one seems to be a a decent deal.

Thanks

As long as it is NOT an auto buy it! You will like it.

The auto tranny likes to take a dump. I had a 91 GT Escort and it was a NICE ride! Smooth to boot.

Ok first of all if automatics are properly maintained they last a long time but people dont seem to take care of them like they should so be wary of that service records of some type are good

I've got a friend with one, 300,000 miles with the auto. Like clockwork a new timing belt every 75,000. Lucky for him it's not an interference motor or it would have been junked years ago. It's not a GT, maybe in the GT pistons will hit the valves?

I've owned a 91 and 97 non GT. They are pretty decent cars my 91 had 270K on it and the auto trans did die. My current daily driver is a '97 wagon with 288K on it. The early ones are better value IMO as Ford took a lot of the little value added extras out of them to save money and the 91 had way better seats in it than my '97. I am not easy on my cars but I religiously change the oil and maintain them and they have been good to me. Stu

I have a 93 Escort S/W with 252,000 miles on it. Best parts gopher that I have ever had. It is a 1.9L, and gets over 30mpg. Rides and drives darn good too. I have owned 5 or 6 Escorts without major problems. The 81 thru 84 models were bad about ruining the heads when the timing belt broke. With proper maint., they were OK.

The GTs are a completely different car than the indestructible 1.9L. I drive a 94 1.9L daily, best car Ford ever made. I have plenty of motor work done to mine also. 38-40 MPG like clockwork.

I teach driving school and the owner had me using a 96 Escort 4 cyl 2 door...u know with the "hangman" seatbelts lol...well that car took a beating and kept on running. he bought it brand new and when I started working there about 5 yrs ago I used it and we just sold it to the local pizza devlivery man who I see driving it up and down the road...that thing has to have about 350,000 miles on it and it runs great. I used to call it my "mini mustang" since it had the spolier ha ha ha
