We have a 2002 Taurus 3.0 SOHC that we guess has been over heating. Previous owners put stop leak in it. Fans dont turn on unless I unplug the temperature sensor and it spits water out of the coolant reservior fill cap.

Number 1 is that's not 3.0L SOHC engine you posted in the pic. That's a 3.0L Vulcan pushrod engine Ford has used in different vehicles since 1986. Since you mentioned the PO put stop leak in I would pressure test the system and look for leaks. Look for signs of leaks other than what's being blown out of the coolant reservoir. Check the simple things next. Check the pressure cap, thermostat and cooling fan operation. Make sure the cooling system and the radiator isn't plugged. Have someone with a scanner check it for codes related to the cooling fans and overheating. When you unplugged the temp sensor you probably set a memory code in the system so you can disregard that. Also when you run the test for codes the cooling fans should run briefly during the test. If they don't it should set a code pointing towards the fan controller. Some Ford dealers have a stand alone tester that will test your fan control module off the car. Although I've seen head gasket problems with that engine, check the simple things first.

I've got a 99 with Vulcan engine. Those Taurus's are kind of notorious for heat core leaks. I had to replace everything in the cooling system and have the engine block hot tanked to get rid of the rust and garbage. I tried flushing everyway I could think of and many times. The block was filled up past the expansion plugs with crap. Too many dissimilar metals in newer cars to skip coolant changes. Get a cooling system pressure tester and see where it's leaking. Previous owner might have ran it low and warped a head. For me aside from the cooling when I got it, it's been a great engine. Not a ton of power but great mileage and over 200K on it now. Way easier to work on than the OHC engine.
