I've noticed that most people seem to be running 195's tires on the front - mainly I think it's for manual steering?????? I have factory power on my 4 door sedan and have a set of 4 chrome smoothies in 15" I want to trade for the 195- 14's I have. I don't know the offset or back space but the seem to run OK on the station wagon they are on.


I'm wondering if anyone has been running with no issues 205 either 65 or 70's tires on the front???? I'm thing the power steering will compensate for a wider front tire.

Your right in that the power steering will make it steer just fine with wider tires.I'm running 17 inch on the front of my Falcon and I'm sure they are wider than 205's. They are a bit hard to park with but are fine once the car is moving . I have manual steering.Might go power later on. Roger

My fronts are 215-45-ZR 17 The backs are 255's. With my set up in the rear I can fit 275's ,but they rub when you hit hard bumps. The rear set up is a four link.I really like the look of my cars stance. I did not build it. It sets down lower than stock but the rear is just a little higher than the front.Roger

Thanks - I did some comparison and found that a 215-60-15 is the same width as the 215-45-17 and about 1/2" taller. Wondering if you did anything to the front for clearance and if you have any issues turning lock to lock on the front?? If there is an extra 1/2" clearance? Thanks LBM :smile2:

My car is lowered some in the front . I'm not sure how much. My front end has the CCP front tube control arms with the coil over shocks.I'm not sure how much clearance there is with the fenders.I will take a look at it in the morning . I do not have any problems with the tires hitting the fenders at any time. You can turn it lock to lock and they do not touch.From what iv'e been told CCP has a power steering kit that has a smaller steering box that offers better clearance.I'm not sure which way I will go with the power steering,CCP power steering or a rack and pinion . Is the 205-60-15 width the thread width or the side wall width?From what I've seen the 17 inch tires have a narrower side wall width than the 15's.Roger

Thanks - I ran into a snag today that brought me back reality pretty quick. I have a 65 4 door sedan and a 65 4 door wagon for parts - both stock. The sedan has stock 14" 5 lug stock rims and the wagon has 15" chrome rims. The rear chromies turned out to have 215/70 -15 tires on them and driving it around there seemed to be no issue with clearance. Today I decided to pull the back chromies off and see how they fit the sedan - had it jacked up with at least 4" clearance under it and found out I could hardly get the tire rim off - sidewalls were just too wide and hit the fender - on both sides. way too much of a problem to fight trying to change a flat tire along the road with wider tires so I'm going back to getting 205/60-15". I think they are just a little wider and just about the same diameter then the stock 14" tires - should work easy. Thanks again LBM

Sorry to hear that. I think with 17 you can run a little wider tire than the 15's becouse the side walls are not as wide on the 17's . Check with a tire dealer,I think they car give you the side wall widths to compare from the 15's and the 17's of the same size.Good luck, Roger

I took a look at the front fender clearance today. There is at least a inch or more space between the side of the tire and the inside lip of the fender. Roger

Thanks - I decided to go with 205/60-15s all the way around - about the same diameter as stock 14's and about 1/2" wider tread wise.. Finally switched to the chrome smoothies and with a tire off the rim measured it as 6" wide with 3 1/2" back spacing. With the tires on those wheels and mounted there is lots of room so the tires won't hit the lip edge and cut a tire. As usual there is always a "but". I jacked up the rear with a floor jack on the rear end pumpkin. At least 4" under the tires. When I went to install the tires the side walls hung up on the lip enough to where I had to wiggle a bit but was not as bad as the 215-60- 15 that were on it. I think if I jacked it up on the frame with the tire hanging the suspension lower the new tires probably would not hit the fender lip. One of these days I'll have to pull a tire for some reason and I'll let it hang just to see. Still seems like a good candidate for a wheel lip roll on the back - front was no issue at all. Looks much better with the chrome smoothies and new tires! Put the old tires and rims on the wagon so it can roll around and not always have flat tires. Put away for the rest of winter - another project for next summer.

I took a look at the front fender clearance today. There is at least a inch or more space between the side of the tire and the inside lip of the fender. Roger

Motovate, you can easily get the tire/wheel off the rear by jacking under the frame, which lets the suspension droop. I run 195/60-15 front and 215/60-15 rear on Torq Thrust Ds, 15x6x3.75 backspacing, and have had the rears off many times with no problems. Also no rubbing front or rear under any conditions.
