A friend of mine has just learned that his original 289 HiPo has a cracked crank. This motor is going in a 64 Fairlane K code car and he doesn't want to just repair the crank. He would like to get a new forged steel one.

Does anyone still make these for a 289? Also, could he use a 302 crank with special pistons? IIRC, the cylinder walls on a 289 are not long enough to support a stock 302 piston, so a shorter piston would have to be used. Right?

'er, not entirely correct. Yes the cylinders are slightly shorter but LOTS of 289 blocks have been converted to 302. He can even keep his old pistons. Just change the crank AND rods. 302 rods are shorter to allow for the increased stroke.
Good Luck.
