I'm looking for a pair of "4-barrel" 289 heads. Are there any unique external markings on these to help identify them from a 2-bbl?

I want to home-build and port a set of iron heads for a 302. I want to start with the best factory castings that I can. So if you have another suggestion I'd like to hear about it. They will be used on a daily driven car with a factory engine block but other moderate performance upgrades.

The 65 and 66 289 heads are the good ones and are marked with the year on the head where the springs are!!!

There is no difference in 289 2V and 4V heads. The compression difference was made up with the pistons. The 2V 289 pistons had a small dish, where the 4V pistons were flat tops.

Only the 289 Hipo heads were any different... and those differences were combustion chamber size, cast in valve spring cups, and screw-in studs. The ports in ALL 289 heads are virtually identical... even the hipo's.

Here's a couple sets for $50 at the http://www.mustangsandmore.com website...

Good Luck!

I already have a set of factory 1968 heads on my 302. Do I understand correctly that I would be just as well off working with those as I would any other factory 289/302 head (excluding hi-po or boss)?

If you want the best factory heads, get a pair of 69-74 351w heads. Just look in the archives. They did flow tests on all different style heads. Factory and aftermarket. The stock 351w heads outflow ported 289/302 heads. Due to their larger ports and valves. And porting the 351's and putting in larger valves will get the flow numbers compairable to aftermarket heads. But if your on a budget, porting your 302's will still help alot.
