It's been a while since I messed with the 289s, but IIRC it should have "289 HP" or "289 HIPERF" or something like that cast into the heads. I could be wrong. Also look for screw in rocker studs. As for the block, I can't remember.
one of the easiest ways is to look for an additional "bob" weight by the harmonic balancer or you can pull a valve cover. the hipo blocks are the exact same as any other 289, but the heads have a cup for the valve springs.
I've seen HP and the like on 100% stock non hipo engines as often as I've seen toyotas driving down the street... Checking the csting #'s is the best and IMHOP Only way to truely know.
