289 horsepower capability

I was woundering if anyone knows the horsepower capability of a natural aspirated 289 cube inch block using ported hipo 289 heads with 1.94/1.60 valves with flat top pistons, bored .030 over and a good roller cam.

Depending on the quality of the port work, 375-400hp wouldn't be out of line with the proper combination.

Your leaving out alot of details that will make or break it though.
I'm thinking more in the line of 340 to 360, but that's just cause I'm a good guesser ;)

and you've never build anything with a solid roller cam, holley HP and a Victor..........:frown::rolleyes:

The key with a small 289 that isn't a torque beast is RPM. With a good port job, 10:1 compression, good intake and good headers...oh yea...and a good SOLID cam that puts your peak HP in the mid 6000s or thereabouts, you can get it up there in the 400 area. Build the bottom end to handle 7000 rpm + and you'll have a fun little screamer. You don't need a roller cam either.

Example: a friend with a 289 .030 over with all the stuff mentioned above including ported '66 heads is right at the 400 mark.
You just wait till he builds it and you'll see that I'm closer! :D

I've never build a performance engine in my life. Simple stock builds and assemblies are my thing... Less to think about :)

But his 289, at 289 Cubes will bring him only 340 to 360 HP in the end... you just watch ;) :D

Oh by the way, that's a SCHITT TON of HP out of less than 300 Cubic Inches! And you guy's think I'm crazy trying to get 250 HP out of my 200 Cubic Inch inline 6 engine! sheesh... I don't see how he can generate 100+ hp over his cubes and you all think I can't generate 1 HP per cube in my SIX... :(

Now days its not a Shizzzz ton of HP out of a 289" motor, you should see what the Comp Eliminator full on race engines make..........

10.5-11:1 Compression Intake Flow in the 225-230cfm range, 750 HP, Victor Intake, Roller Cam in the 250 @ .050 on the intake and 260 on the exhaust with about .650 lift on a 106 or 108 and some well built headers........ and don't be afraid to spin it !!!

293" @ 375hp = only 1.28 hp per CID

293" @ 400hp = 1.37 hp per CID

both easily and well proven if the right parts and work is done.

Problem with the 200 6 cylinder is the avalibility of parts and the head SUCKS, it makes a stock SBF head look race quality !!!

Now you do have a good point, if the guy doesn't know much about engines and where to get good parts and work done it may not break 250hp !! But he asked about the potential...........

I'm gonna agree with FE, I think about 360 is a good guess of whats the output.

FE, I'd look at Aussie parts for your I6, they make performance parts for their inlines. Though they'd hard to find and acquire, just sayin.
I built a serious drag race 289 several years ago- I was kind of surprissed when it got up to 419 Hp at 7600 with one 750 modified carb on a Parker funnel web manifold== I did the heads for a full race 289 Cobra used for road racing, and it made 439 Hp at 7500 with four Webbers-These guys spin them up to 8000-8500 on ocasion too

I think the heads will limit you.If you use AFR or another good head 10.1 com and a good roller cam you sure can make 400hp,Just make sure your valvetrain is up to par.You will need to spin it 7000 to 7500 but thats not a problem good rod bolts and get it balanced.I seen a stock class 65 stang come out at 9000 with a stick its on y-tube
Hell throw in a set of good heads like AFRs 425-450hp no problem...

Used to run 289/302's back in the day with solid lifters to 7500-8000 all the time.
I kind of agee with FEandGoingBroke on this one. He did say he was wondering about HP with the heads & pistons he has, not a wish list of parts to get him there. I say something in the 300-350 HP range, maybe more if he's going for all out HP and not street driveability.

Can a 289 make huge power if there are no limits or budget? Of course, but that wasn't the question. Add all forged internals, pro-port those heads and add a blower and he'll blow us all away with 600 HP and some 10 sec. ET's.
You guy's gotta see it my way... His name is Lexus...

340 to 360! TOPS!

Harumph! ;)

About the Aussie crap. NO WAY :) I'm making my 250 HP Naturally aspirated and with the LOG HEAD on it ;) Just you wait :D

I remember back in the 80's before the aftermarket heads hit the scene, it was common around here for Ford guys to have the Chevy 1.94/1.60 valves installed in their SBF heads and "hog" them out to improve flow. They typically liked to use the "hipo" heads for the small combustion chamber in order to make compression too.
I never saw any of those engines built for street-use making more than about 325HP on the dyno. The Chevy guys that could rummage up a set of factory 2.02 valve, angle-plug small block heads were making 375 + on the street all day long with 350's and more with 400 small blocks. But when aftermarket heads and then stroker kits came along, everything changed.

Granted, we also didn't have modern cam profiles, intakes, etc. back then either. Given that, I still think you're looking at about 350HP max with a stock-stroke 289 and those heads in any kind of streetable combination (without putting more than the price of a set of aftermarket heads into those heads).
Of course as others have stated, with a good set of aftermarket heads (and better yet a stroker kit), 400HP and up becomes very realistic.

I resent the remarks his name is lexus,I use the user name lexus out of love for my Daughter, being that is her name, and for the question I asked about the 289,I have a chance to get one already prepped at a good deal, and I already have a set of hipo 289's heads worked on the shelf,I just wanted to know if it was worth my time. But if you are tring to say because my user name is LEXUS I can't make horsepower,Hell I have two other set's of aluminum heads also on the shelf ready to go,some of us still like to play with old school. So don't unestimate a man when he ask a Budget question. And thanks to all you other guys that gave your great opinion.FEandGoingBroke is just being a _ _ick.
What a damn PANZY! HAHAHAH

I tease you because of your Toyota name and you whine.

Come on man, your skin is waaay to thin! :)

To me and EVERYONE I know I'm 100% positive that the FIRST thing a person thinks of when they hear the word LEXUS is TOYOTA....

Same as Mercedes, NOBODY in their right mind thinks of an Adorable 4 year old girl in pig tails smiling brightly when they hear the name LEXUS or any other car name for cryin' out loud.

If you cant figure I was having fun with you then maybe you should rethink your reply.

I said 340 to 360, and when you are done building the 289 and I am sure that my opinion will have been SPOT ON. :D

Your question was answered. Some HIGH numbers and some Good numbers, but NONE of the numbers were insulting!

Now that I've defended my maidenhood and honor, let's have everyone raise their hand if they think of a little girl when they see the word Lexus....

I hope your build comes along wonderfully and you make a gazillion HP with it. :)

I'll just post a 289 combo that yielded 375 HP on an engine dyno and 315 RWHP on a chassis dyno. Later on, the carbs, distributor and timing were tuned and the new dyno resulted in 340 RHWP (~400 HP at the flywheel)

'66 289 block .030 over
stock crank and rods with ARP hardware
Forged pistons 10:1 compression
'66 heads professionally ported by Superior Automotive, Anaheim, Ca
1.90/1.60 valves
Comp 294S Solid Lifter cam
Dual Quad Holley manifold with dual 540s
1.6 roller rockers
Dougs Tri-y headers
Borla Exhaust

Very streetable combo with a toploader 4 speed and aftermarket 8" posi and axles behind it.

He'll be lucky to see 300-320hp with that combination of parts listed....:):)
I really don't think he'll do it.

If he's that sensitive to a ribbing about his Toyota name, he's probably already given up on the project.

Yep, I've driven away another promising young member... :( Sorry guy's
See FEandGoingBroke you stated your opinion as others has some on the high side, some lowside and some along there with you and you still want to bring up old spilled milk, who's whining now, never the less,as I stated if the combo I stated at the top of this post won't cut the mustard,I do have the capaibility lying around on the shelf of two more set of aftermarket Aluminum heads that I know will get me in the ball park of what I asked, just testing with old school, because I also have it laying around,Now What!! again,Thanks Guys for your opinions, you can never get enough knowlege.
