Hi there ...
So I'm trying to get this 289 idnetified and the engine ID tag is gone, no suprise. this is the data I have...

The 5th digit in on the VIN is a C - Would it be safe to assume that this is the engine identifier? the reason I ask is that the book indicates that I should be looking for a 5 digit number and there are no plain 5 digit numbers. to add to my confussion there is a K on a stamped identification tag in the engine compartment. It looks like this;

4 f1 5xxxCxxxxxx
65A R 26
BS K 4speed V-8

thanks fo rthe help ...

You have a C code engine. The "K" on the tag in the engine compartment may refer to the location of the build. In this case I think it's Kansas City. However, I reserve the right to be wrong, as usual...

If you have a C in the fifth position of your VIN your car was originally equipped with a "C"
code 289. That is to say a 2 barrel carb and intake. After so many years, it's safe to say that most C codes have been changed and modified to improve performance.
