My '71 302 has the stock timing pointer bracket bolted to the timing chain cover on the passengers side. It has the usual timing pointer on the bracket, but then to it's left a few inches there is a little tube welded on(maybe 1/2" diameter by 3/4" tall), pointing down at the damper as well. Can anyone tell me what that little tube is for?
Thanks.

It was for use with diagnostic equipment of the day. A probe from a shop's scope was inserted in that tube to read ignition timing. You''ll also notice a large groove across the harmonic balancer. This is what provided the signal to the magnetic timing probe.

So...in theory, if you could see that groove in the tube with a timing light, you could also time the engine by it? I won't be trying this...just courious.
