Well my son decided he wants my 69 1/2 Mav but with a 351W and C-4 in it.
So it's been 20 years since I've done this swap and lots of changes since then. I know the steering box and headers are no fun, but any other little tricks I need to watch out for?
6 cyl 170 spd manual 7.5 to a 351W, C-4 and 8" posi. I have the C-4 for rebuild and 8" from a 72 Mav that matches the width on drums and spring perches. Going form 4 lug to 5 lug manual front disc, manual steering. I've heard that the trans tunnel on the early Mavs is small and the C-4 can be a problem, any feedback on this?

Mild 351W with enclosing the trunk due to the gas tank along with frame connectors and 2 point roll bar to stiffen it up some.

The running gear is all in good shape, new U joints, new 9" clutch/PP bearing and trans and rearend have been rebuilt with new bearings and brakes. So if anyone wants to pick them up?
the 170 engine runs good and only has 56K miles on it. Bearings are good. no smoke, rebuilt carb and dist.

kinda old thread but its not that easy to swap i would go with a 302 its a a more straight forward swap. <<<<<<<
but if you want to go with the 351w you will need to cut the shock towers back about an inch, sand down some exhaust manifold or get a set of cheapo headers and find a BFH. also you will need to get the different tranny cross member, belly bar, and v8 frame mounts.

I looked at cutting back the shock towers. Going to do that for some R&D for a 68 Cougar next that a 460 is going in to.

i cut mine back half an inch and it helps more than you think it would, but the problem is fitting headers. i ran modified manifolds for a while but swapped to headers had to dent some tubes and the floor board to get them to fit, still have a couple exhaust leaks. ive decided to go with the r&c mustang II frontend, better handling and more room then i will know what to do with.

any pictures you can post would be most helpful. I'm putting the 351W together now and the trans rebuild next month. 8" rearend housing is being powder coated right now.
Did you also go to disc brakes up front and if so, which setup?

In other news, I scored a nice find in the boneyard yesterday. The BBF C-4 bellhousing, D5OP ($40). Now I can also move forward on putting my 460, C-4 in my 68 Cougar for the Silver State Classic race.

Test fit went well. Engine with Performer manifold and air cleaner fits under the hood easily. Taller manifold would be and issue depending on aircleaner base and manifold height. The C-4 using the 6cyl crossmember works perfectly using C-4 rubber mount.
The shock towers were to close for me so I'm going to modify them. I hate taking 2 hrs to change one spark plug.
Radiator with electric fan is easy also.
I know most people want to do this without making these types of mods, which is possible. But I like it easier to work on down the line, especially if bigger headers are planned.

Nice. Will the blower motor clear when you're done? And, are you planning to use the ram-air assembly? I assume you're going to notch the towers like you have started on the Cougar.

I have the dash completely torn apart to clean and redo the instruments, heater box and wiper assembly and I wasn't sure yet if it would be for racing or street legal. Actually I never really worried about it since the motor opening was up and away from the engine. So since you made me wonder about it, I installed and checked it out. MC has about a finger width of room too. Notched shock towers is the only way to go.

BBF bellhousing was a lucky one. And fits nicely in the 68 Cougar.

And I figured while I was at it,
out with the old and in with more new.
Front disc brakes.
These are the "Granada" types aka, 74+ Mav, Comet, Granda and Monarch are all the same ones and fit.
This fit the old 6 cyl, control arms and outer tierod ends. No changes are required if you have new parts there already or fit the old parts. Brake hose even fits to the old fittings.

And just for the record, Rock Auto was my supplier for the Calibers and some other misc parts. Highly recommended.

The Cougar is going to be next. Just put the Mav back in the garage yesterday to get her finished.
I have the rims for the Cougar after I figured out backspacing and tire specs.
I have to run a V rated tire for the speeds she'll be run at.
With the speed, gears and tire size, I'll only be turning appx 3900 rpms at 120 mph. That's why the 460 for the low rpm torque.
The Cat will have the underside, and engine bay powder coated gross black. There's a shop here in town that can actually do a whole car if you want to.
I took a month off of the Mav to play with the Stang. After having it running and driving, had to fix a few details I didn't like.

Well finished the Pass exhaust side. Have it so you can actually put the pass headers in from the top without lifting the engine out. Now for the other side.
I have all the pieces, just waited until the headers and exhaust was done up. Electric cooling fan, rebuilt heater assembly, got the 3.00 posi 8" in that's been rebuilt with new brakes.

74s are easier since the shock/spring towers seem to be just a little wider. Several things I've learned is the trans crossmember on 71+ Mav/Comets work with the exhaust better. 70 only had a 6 cyl and that's an issue. The holes in the trans tunnel aren't drilled for a double hump crossmember. (well they are now).
Another big issue is Headers from the same manufacturer can be different. Collector length and angle is different at times.
Hard part is some work and some don't.
I did this swap 20 years ago with a 72 and didn't have some of the header problems I've had. I notched the shock towers, actually more then needed for the headers, but it does make working on them the spark plugs etc much easier. Especially when you put the headers on and off 5 times for the pass side and 10 for the driver's. I got real good at putting them in with a few moves and in about 5 minutes.
I could write a tech article on what I've learned about header prep and installation. Lots of little tricks that make or break you. Amazing the welds, especially inside the collectors when you start checking them.
The 2 1/4" exhaust system I bought from Summit Racing, which I work about 1 mile away from. It's good quality and mandel bends make it work well.

It's Alive! and it is a BEAST. Got her running this weekend and she is a runner already. Now to do all the little things that make it fun to drive.
