i realize that the 4.6 motor has a different bell pattern from 289-351 motors. but i think i read somewhere that the first year or early 4.6s came with the 302 pattern. true? if so, what year(s)? also, i know 400M engines had 460 bell pattern, but didnt 351M have 302 pattern?

thanx in advance for the help.

IIRC from reading here. up to 95 used the 302 pattern (someone will chime in on this Im sure, I very well could be wrong) I know they were early 4.6's though.

351M had the 460 pattern.

They made a 400 block in 72 that has the small block pattern on it. Don't believe me? I have pics.

There are a couple different 4.6 patterns depending on if it's front or rear wheel drive, but I honestly have no idea if the early ones had the SBF pattern.

1991 (Town Car only) and early 1992 cars that had the AOD trans, rather than the AODE, had the SB style bellhousing pattern.

but there are companies like that make adapter plates and bellhousings if you want to mate an AOD, C4, PowerGlide, TH400 and TH350 to a 4.6...........

Pretty rare in any event. Have yet to find one "in the wild" as it were. AFAIK, none of the 4.6-type motors ever had a 289/302 type bell. Interchangeable parts? Are you nuts? Ford had a better idea.

The RWD F1 4.6 blocks were cast with the W bell bolt pattern.
