My brother has a 70 Cyclone spoler that had a 429/4speed combo and for reasons of insanity(and the current price of fuel) has put a 4.6L from a police crown vic in it. The problem is the wiring harness. Is there anywhere you can get a stand alone harness for the 4.6 yet. I know they make them for the 5.0's now but havent been able to find any info on one. I will post pics of the car with installed 4.6 and AOD as soon as I figure out how.

I'd say don't do it either. The no-torque 4.6 is going to have trouble in that large a vehicle. Curb weight on the Cyclone has to be close to the Crown Vic ... and a stock Crown Vic certainly doesn't generate much excitement in the acceleration department, especially compared to a 429 CJ.

Anyway, Western Motorsports in Calgary, Alberta, Canada is a dealer for SDS EFI systems. They have a specific stand-alone 4.6 / 5.4 modular engine kit.

That Cyclone is lighter then a crown vic for sure. He might see high 14's with a tail wind. But congrats to him I say! Going into uncharted territory is cool! All he would need is a 410/430 gear to wake it up if he ever feels the need.

I am interested in doing the 4.6 swap into my 73 Ranchero. Does the engine clear the HVAC unit on the passenger side?

On the cyclone the heater/ac system does not extend into the engine bay therefore there was no interference problems with the swap. The only problem encountered was the drivers exhaust manifold hit the master cyllinder/pwr brake booster, and the steering box, He altered a passenger side manifold to fit on the drivers side, This was done by cutting and re-welding the pipe into the correct position. The oil pan was also modified to become a "Front Sump" fabricated a new pickup tube and the engine was in the car. He used 97 ltd engine mounts on the engine and fitted them to a set of 429 mounts to bolt to the frame. Now comes the fun part.. The wiring. trying to figure out what wires to keep and what to get rid of. This has been a time consuming process and is still underway... hope this helps

If you are going to do a swap like that, why not a cobra engine or other DOHC engine? I think the crown vic engine is a wheezy 215hp. Even the later mustang 4.6 at 260 isnt that great. At least the cobra starts out at 305, and a lincoln 4.6 is 280. I think hes going to be sorely dissapointed when its done for all the work he put into it. I would have left the 429 4spd combo in it and sucked it up on the fuel. I bet the swap isnt going to "pay for itself" for a few years at least anyway.

We are doing a 4.6 litre conversion in a 1960 Staliner right now and we contacted a company called The Detail Zone and they had a kit for our conversion. They may have what you are looking for. You can find them at www.thedetailzone.com or call 1-877-968-7842. Hope it helps.

honestly, from a guy on the other side of the world to where all the coolest muscle cars are,
this is just sad,
i dont want to offend anyone,
but hell,
id almost give my left nut for a 70 cyclone bb-4 speed car,and this throwing a gutless 4.6 in it is just ...not right to say the least...hey,thats my opinion.
i honestly hope your brother doesnt get that thing running and puts the 429 back where it belongs,
tell him if he wants to whine about the price of gas to look at what people on other parts of the planet pay,
last time i looked you guys were paying under half what it costs me.......im sure you get my point

Long awaited update

Ok Ok I know it's been a while... Been REAL busy. Good news is I finally graduated from college....YIPEE!!!. The 4.6 is alive in the Cyclone thanks to a 1400.00 kit from the DETAIL ZONE. most of these kits are used for the ac cobra replicas but the engine and drivetrain is the same.. We had some problems.. ALOT of fustrations.. some bruised and bloodied knuckles.

He almost gave up on the 4.6 when it wouldnt stay running until I told him he had the wrong alternator on hte car. He had put the old alt from the 429 (a measely 65 amp job) on the engine. Evidentally it wasnt giving enough charge to run all the electronics. we swapped the origional 140 amp alt from the 4.6 and it came alive. There are a few minor finishing touches to the install to be done yet. On a positive note, this swap was completed without harming or cutting anything on the body (almost a direct bolt in). This was to ensure the 429 combo could be replaced withiut a hitch. There is nothing about this car that would tell you it was a 4.6 fi with an OD in it. We even made the origional console auto shifter work and hid all the electronic components except for under the hood.

I will post some new pics as soon as it's roadworthy...

awesome. As a guy who sold his 460 powered 66 lane and purchased a 97 mustang gt (with plenty left over), i applaud your craziness. I enjoy long cruising as well as light to light in-city throttle mashing. This little 20 city/30hwy mpg might make its way into my 62 sports coupe real quick.

Kudos to him for attempting that mod...
However, please find the closest heavy blunt object and hit him in the skull with it!
That is a RARE car... and in calypso coral no less!

That rareness is what will kill hot rodding one day. Who cares anyway, nothing was harmed in the making of that Mod powered beast like he said.

No, I have to resepctfully disagree....
What kills hotrodding is when a guy has a 302 2-barrel automatic brown car and thinks its a Cobra-jet and trys to get 25,000 for a rusted out car.

This car is a "true" muscle car and should be kept, IMHO stockish.
Take my car... its a fastback but a simple C-code, standard interior car that I have transformed. If it was a K-code 4speed car... no way would I mess with it.
IN the end, its HIS car... but he will regret doing that modification to THAT car... a real 70 cyclone spolier, 4 speed, 429 cobra jet car in calypso coral... how many of those were made? 100? How many left? 10% MAYBE?
