Crank should be a 1U, 1UB, or 1UA casting. With the 1st two being CJ or regular 428, the last being SCJ. The SCJ will also have capscrew rods.

Other than that, no external differences that are positive ID

My 428 block had a C6ME number. It was from a '67 T-bird. It had a 1U crank. It is not a CJ motor. It did have a "A" cast into the back side of the block(trany side). I heard the CJ motors had a "CJ" mark in place of the "A". The C7ME-A blocks were used from 67-70. The best clue would be the crank part number as stated before by My427stang. Knowing what the motor came out of also might be a good indicator of what the motor really is do to the lack of externally telling the difference between a 352, 360, 390, 410, 428. All 428's were externally balanced and the CJ's had a special counter weight behind the front damper.
