So long story short, were doing a y block swap into a 56 ford with a 223. Its a 56 fairlane y block that's been rebuilt and should not have a problem going in. I just want to make sure that before we start the swap, that we have everything we need. We recently acquired a fordomatic out of a 59 or so truck. It has the external cooling lines, the non finned torque converter, and the truck type bellhousing with a vent on the top and side. It also has the mounting points on it. So the main questions are, are the 223 and y block torque converters the same, will the truck bellhousing work, and if they aren't the same, where can one find a finned torque converter that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. It's been about 55 years or so since I fooled with the y blocks but I think the 223 is a 6 cyl. The 56 eng you have should be a 292 if I remember correct. The truck bellhouseing should fit the eng if it's off a v8 but the truck mounts on the lower edges might be a issue but I don't really think so especially today with the ability to rework exhaust pipes. Also I'm not sure that the truck trans has a mount provision on the tailshaft houseing that's needed for the crossmember in the car.

My fooling with the old y blocks was usually pulling them to put a Fe engine in its place . I ran several 292's in a couple of 57 Fairlanes.
.Best I recall the 272/292/312 y blocks had a lot of Parts that would interchange.

If I were you I would look hard at the lower a arm connections at the front frame connections because my buddy and my self both had issues with the frame rottening out there on 56 Fairlanes.


That was the only year I had issues with and I had 54,55,56,&57 Fairlanes
