Haven't done much with this coupe lately, I've been tied up with the Fairlane. I did order a USA-66 radio. I wish I had done a little more research on this, I'm a little disappointed for the $300 I spent on it. It looks ok sitting in the daytime, but the LED's are kelley green, way brighter than the cluster, and the dial is off, i.e. if I have it on 90.1 it tunes in 92.5 or so. I figure I'll just get used to it, maybe it won't be so noticeable come summer when I'm not driving at night so much.

Maybe someone has some ideas to tone down these LED's? Possibly just the front cover comes off to gain access?

I've just been enjoying the car, trips from Dallas to San Antonio, Tyler, Palestine etc. Drove down to Ennis to make a pass, didn't plan on sitting in the stage lanes for two hours but hey, that's how it goes. I have some sorting out to do for the track for sure, this pass was shockingly slow. Not terribly concerned, if I can take a 50 year old car drag racing an hour away and get 20mpg, I won't complain about how slow it is when I get there.

Nice! Did you find a solution for the radio? I just saw someone put a Retrosound model 2 unit in their Torino and it looks really good. They didn't comment on the light color or intensity, but you might be able to find others that have tried it.

No, I sure haven't done anything about the radio. I'm having an issue with it only playing out of the right side. I have to give it the Fonz to the get the rest of the speakers working. I've changed the ground and power, same problem. I can plug my phone into the radio end of the RCA's that go to the amplifier, with no problem. It actually seems to be getting less frequent, so....unicorns and sunshine. In any case, I don't think I'll try to modify a radio that is suspect for failure.

This is just an idea, but...

Illumination should be handled by a specific wire on the radio pigtail. Simply cut that wire and solder in a rheostat that lets you dial down the brightness.

When you get it to a level you can live with, put a dab of silicon rtv on it to hold it the knob in place, and stuff it back up under the dash.

Jsimmonstx, thank you for the input. The USA-66 doesn't have an illumination wire, it's a little unusual but it does make for a slightly quicker install. The problem with the left speakers cutting out is getting worse, so I need to address that before I work on the illumination.

Moved to a different city, different shop, and I've been driving this mustang just about every day, doing good! I've made the trip from Dallas to Austin in it around a half dozen times now. I figured I'd get the lower hose taken care of...that involved swapping the timing cover from the early 65 to the later cover, a 68. The water pump is now an aluminum drivers side pump. The hose used is a gates 20609, for a 70 mustang Windsor motor. I guess i wasn't aware that my A/C bracket wouldnt fit, as well as the lower alternator support. I'll have to get back to the A/C bracket, but the alternator brace wasn't too much of a problem.

I've had a need to get my engine bay wiring cleaned up and sorted out. I won't be adding any accessories in the engine bay, but I'm leaving a couple of extra wires in the new harness for stuff like rally-pac gauges. I will hard wire everything to make sure it lays out correctly, then go back with weatherpack connectors as needed. I plan on using a project box to house the circuit breakers, a bus bar, and fan relays. I'll mount the duraspark and fuse box on or next to that.

I got the Engine portion and the fan sub-harness done, but I'll need to do the drivers side wiring to drive away.

I got everything moved to the drivers side of the engine bay. I mocked up a board the size of a project box I ordered, put everything together to test and take a count of weatherpack connectors that I need. I didn't have enough on hand so another order was made, just waiting on supplies now. In the mean time I started on the schematic for the engine bay.







I also threw on the Calverts I had ordered a few months back. It's been wet the last couple of days but should dry up today. I have noticed the rear end doesn't want to skip sideways over bumps in corners, very happy about that. I am impressed especially considering they aren't charged.

The weather was pretty foul today, so I took the free time to swap all the power distribution into the project box, then installed it into the car. I put weather pack connectors on where needed, and labeled everything I could think of. I still need to run my amp wire down the fender and wire up the a/c switch, I wanted that stuff separate from the main harness. Things are looking much tidier.

I've just been driving the car most every day, getting my fun and use out of it. I swapped the wheels for some American Racing wheels. I am doing some maintenance and replacing a fan controller over the break, I'll have that stuff up soon.

Well, I cut the Mustang loose this week. I really hated to see it go but I got a smoking deal on a Cobra replica a few months ago, and couldn't have them both. I still bleed Ford blue and I'm not going anywhere! Here are the final results:

The Cobra is a Component Craft from the 90's. We have a couple others in the shop, and the quality holds its own very well. I drove it from Austin to New Mexico for Christmas, it did great, driving it any rain-free day since. Pretty similar setup to my Mustang, roller 302, T-5, Alu heads etc [email protected]
