My mechanic is having some problems getting the factory tachometer wired up in my fastback.
He hasn't been able to find diagrams for a '68 and the wires don't match the diagrams he has for the '69 models.
Was there a change made between the years?
Also, a test procedure for the tach. itself would be great so we can rule out it as the source of the problem.
The car used to be a 390 auto, but was swapped to a 4 speed configuration and has had at least a 428 and the current 429 installed, so some things may have been lost in the shuffle.
I bought this car for my dad and it would be nice if we could finally get it on the road and drive it.
Thanks for any help.

I dont remember the colors but the two tach wires go on the positive side feed wire to the coil. One from the ignition side goes to tach and the wire out of tach goes to the coil pos. side.It goes inline..As far as testing it I have heard you can hook it to a am radio and tune it to see it move (never have did this)Personaly I would remove and send it to a tach repair shop and have it checked and calibrated considering the value of it

When we rebuilt the 351w in my '69 we went to a later Ford electronic distributor fired by a MSD 6AL box. The factory in dash tach wouldn't work until we added an MSD Tach Adapt box to the circuit. Check their (MSD) website for info. Good luck, Gary Gordon

Here you go right from my memory...

Your mechanic will find 4 wires on your factory tach. They are Green, Red, Black, and one other color...

Green goes to the NEG- side of the coil.

Black goes to a ground.

Red goes to a Positive (I believe any positive is fine as long as it's a key on positive)

The last wire should go to the Headlight dimmer switch to auto light the tach when you pull the HL switch on.

I owned (16yrs.)a 68 Torino GT (same color as yours even)original factory tach and convenice group/clock and the tach has two wires period! The wiring diagram FE gave is a standard generic wiring most all aftermarket tachs use.The factory Torino uses the positive side between the ignition pos wire and coil to signal the tach.I know it sounds crazy but many early fords did it this way.On the back ot the dash cluster on the tach you will see two wires .not very long go into a plug, then the tach harness will go through the firewall to /next to coil andif they are still present you should see the connectors that jumper between the coil positive wire and the tach harness to coil.By the way the back/dash lighting is by way of the printed circut board. You are positive its a factory tach in the 3rd pod and is part of the dash cluster?

fairmnt510 is correct... MAKE Sure you are getting 12 volt to tach. black wire from back of tach goes to ground on body under dash above accelerator pedal.light comes from multi pin connecter to curcuit board.
