I just bought a 1977 Ranchero with a stock 302 automatic. Wish it were a 351M/400, but it is what it is, and it's ready for paint.


The only real engine upgrade the previous owner made was a pair of Blackjack headers. The motor is bone stock with around 90K.

I really just want to get this painted, get the chrome on, windshields in and an exhaust system for cruising season. But, I also want to make sure this 3,600lb. beast will pull up the hills around here in the Pocono Mountains.

I was thinking of upgrading the stock 2 barrel Motorcraft carb. I see Holley makes a "circle track" 500cfm 2 barrel (part #4412) that will bolt right on. Does Edelbrock also offer one? Or am I better off just rebuilding the stock 2bbl?


Why did Ford put a 302 in these Rancheros anyway?

There's no point in putting a bigger two barrel on there in my opinion..I would get yourself a nice aluminium aftermarket dual plane like a performer or similar and a small 4 barrel carb..This will go nicely with your headers....If you wanted to get more into the engine you could swap on some earlier heads...The 77-78 302s had huge combustion chambers in the heads so ford brought the flat top pistons up to pretty much zero deck hieght.They were still only 8.8:1 compression....If you bolt on some earlier heads like a set of 69-70 351 heads with 60cc chambers you will have around 10:1ish compression with bigger valves to boot...My brother built a 78 302 around these parts and it works very well.

You know, I wasn't even thinking that way. But you're absolutely right. I do plan on driving this pretty much daily through October and 93 octane is hovering around $3 a gallon.

Maybe I should be thinking about popping a mast up from the bed for a sail.

You shouldn't have any problems getting around with that 302, Those motors have pushed a lot of vehicles since it first came about. Big cars, small cars, trucks, vans, boats. Think about it. If you want to go faster then that is another story. But like you said gas in PA is pricey.

Thanks for the info. Save me about $200 for a rebuilt Holley 2 barrel.

Guess I'll just tune it up and put on an open air filter (K&N) assembly for now and put some money aside over the next few months for an intake, 4 barrel, and a pair of older heads. In the meantime...I think I lose the air pump.

Mike by all means watch your favorite classifieds..You can get some killer deals on used intakes and carbs that won't cost you too much.For now the K&N should be fine.
