My buddy is looking to install a 87 5spd.ECM into his 87 Cougar with auto.

Will this work as a drop in or will there need some wires swapped around? Mustang ECM's work in Cougars?

I never played much with the 5.0L EFI. Owned a 89 once never worked on it.

He was told this will help him with tuning? I dont think he has the mass air conversion either.

As I understand it (anyone is free to correct me) the 5.0 Mustang auto ECUs had a more aggressive tune namely in the timing curves but since the cougar is not an HO version I believe it will work since the 87' Mustangs didn't have mass air.

If he's got tuning issues now the 87 Puter won't help any. He'll need to go to a 89-up mass air Puter.

A few years ago I tried a 5spd computer in my 87 Cougar with an automatic and when she warmed up it would stall out,I swapped the auto computer back in and the issue was sloved. I asked around and was told it was due to the 5spd computer not being able to compensate for the sudden drop in rpms when I put the car into gear and the auto could. I also heard it was the exact difference that the 5spd comp. had the more agressive timing and fuel curve. Not suree if someone was blowing smoke or not .

I can understand why the auto ECU would have a more aggresive tune since it has a slushbox AOD trans in it and I wouldn't think the 5 spd would need it but nothing I say is the gospel.

Taht was my thoughts also,but everyone I talk to said it was the 5spd or there was no diff in the timing curve or fuel. And try to get a straight answer from Frod about it is impossible in seems.

I thought the difference would be whether it is bank fire or sequential fire on the injectors. You might try to find out which your car is before swapping it over.

The Mustang computer is for an H.O. engine,the Cougar isn't an H.O.,unless it's been swapped.The H.O. computer won't work with a standard 5.0.The firing order is different .The H.O. has a 351 W firing order.
