I'm changing the housing ends on my 1967 9" rearend to the larger Torino style bearings, and while I'm at it, I'm wondering if I should shorten the housing by 1" on each side for better wheel/tire clearance. The new housing width would match the 65-66 width.

Is this a good idea?

Are there any known problems with installing a 9" rearend with the 1965-1966 width specs in a 67?

Thanks for the help.

You won't really gain anything by shortening the rearend and not moving the springs in or tubbing the car.The width of the rear end just determines the offset of the wheel it won't allow you to run a bigger rim and tire.... It will give you more clearance if you are running a wheel that is very close to the fender lip now and you have extra room towards the spring side of the car.

You can get a 9.5 up to a 10 inch wheel back there in the 67/68 cars if the wheels are done right with the correct backspace and offset. You don't really need to do what your asking. Like said before if you going to do that you might as well go with a mini tub. I run a 9.5 inch wheel in back on mine with a 275/40/17 with NO rubbing ever and I have plenty of room to put a bigger tire on it later. How big of a wheel/tire are you trying to get under there?

I have almost no room left in my wheel wells - maybe a half inch on the back and an 8th on the front - it varies from car to car. That much work is far less than mini-tubbing.

True what he wants to do would be less work. But from how my car works I have quite a bit of room with my 275/40/17 and I am about to put the 315/35/17 Nitto drag radials on it. Those fit nice on a 9.5 inch rim and I have the room for it. I have seen a 67 fastback with 10s in the rear and the guy did no mods to the wheel wells or suspension. The wheels just fit right so it works.

You get a 275/40/17 in there without any issues? Maybe I'm getting overly concerned about something I shouldn't bother with?!
Yes NO issues what so ever. And I am going to a bigger tire as soon as I save up for them. The Nitto 315/35/17 will fit just fine in there and that is what I am going to.

What backspacing are your 9.5 wheels?
I believe they are around 5.75 but that is with me measuring them. I don't really know if I did it the right way. I bought my wheels from the guy that had them custom made for his 67 Vert. He then sold them to me. They fit perfect on his car also so between my car and his there must not be very much variation.
