Hi Guys, got a 9" rear end question, I've searched a bunch and read Kevinstang's 9" website info, still unclear to me.

I have a complete rear end from my Dad's collection after he passed away, I'm 90% sure it's a 9" as I can't get a 3/8 ratchet and socket on the bottom two bolts. My question is the axle tubes are tapered, big then taper smaller. Doesn't look at all like the one I have in my 64 Galaxie at all.

What do I have 9" or 8". Anything bad or good about this tapered axle tube design?

The Fairlane and Mustang axle tubes tapered just before the spring perches . The Mustang (65-66) is very obvious and more taper than the '66 up Fairlane /Mustang housings. You could also measure the housing length .

Give me a day or two and I'll gather more info, I sincerely appreciate the info and questions/comments. There is a smidge of a story with this...

I'm a Ford guy through and through. 64 Galaxie, 64 F100, 69 Fairlane, 2016 F-150, 2013 Flex, have had two expeditions, a ranger, two thunderbirds and even a Tempo in college.

My 64 Galaxie is and has been set up a few years, built 390, C-6, 3.75 rear gears with trac loc... My first serious hot rod, love that big 'ol girl.

My project now is a Ford, a Ford my Dad started and never finished before passing away a year ago. He found a 1969 Fairlane 500 in 2003 with just 17,000 miles on it from a Preacher in Waco TX. Hauled it home to NW Iowa and removed the entire drivetrain. Had a 408 Stroker built by Kuntz Racing engines, Art Carr C-4, spent over 10K on the engine and trans, and did an amazing job on wiring etc... Dad was a Marine Mechanic for 30+ years.

Well it never got back on the road, he died a year ago now, I bought the car and all the stuff with it Sept 2018, hauled it home to nashville and got it back together and on the road, it's absolutely sick. The last big part is taking out the 8" rear end and installing the 9" he had for it. I have the pumpkin with 3.25 gears and trac loc, and the rear end housing that needs to be rebuilt with new bearing etc.. I'll have to weld on new Axel perches and Shock mounts etc...

So I'm trying to really understand what 9" housing I have, and likely find someone in the Nashville area to build the housing for me and pop in the pumpkin and get it under the car. If I do it that will take another 9 months, too busy with work, kids etc...

According to Kevinstang 9 inch website


'The HIPO 289 cars were the only 65-66 Mustangs to recieve factory 9" axles, the tubes are tapered as well at the end to utilize the same lower shock plate as the regular 65-66 Mustangs. '

the key is to take some measurements. Spring perches, flange to flange etc and maybe look at the size of the brakes if it still has the drums and shoes on it.

I have a tapered 9" in my 60 Galaxie. The axle came from a 71 Tbird. As was mentioned, the taper occurs at the spring perch location. In fact the spring perch straddles the taper point. I used spring perches that fit the narrower portion of the axle tube and enlarged the inboard spring perch opening. I think my perches came from RuffStuff Specialties. I have not noticed any ill effects of the tapered design -- my car is at 600 horse.
