My gramps in P.A. got a 97 F150 4.6 V8 4x4 3.55 gears. The rear is whinning and the people there say it cant be rebuilt. TRUE? Sounds kinda fishy. What should he be looking at price range. Thanks in advance.

I might be wrong, but I thought those trucks all had the 8.8" rear end still. Someone in the know will correct me if I'm wrong. But if its an 8.8, I don't think there is any reason why it CAN'T be rebuilt???? Maybe someone is just blowin smoke.

yes it's an 8.8, if it's a 4.6. The 5.4's got the larger 9.75" rear....

But sure, it can be rebuilt. Most of the time just a set of bearings, axle bearings, and perhaps new axles depending on whether the area where the bearing rides is in good shape or not.

What they're probably trying to tell you is that it might be cheaper to find another one.
