I have a 8.8 IRS in a project I’m building and I’m trying to narrow the width about 2” per side and wonder if anyone else has ever done this. If so did you have to build control arms or were you able to buy them somewhere. Also. What axels were used ?? Is there anything that’s shorter with same spline that I could get or is it a custom axel. Any thoughts or anything on the matter are appreaciated. It’s a full custom build just trying to see what others might have done before I go out and build arms

This sounds like a cool project. Getting the geometry right with modifying the control arms would probably take some effort. Let us know how it goes.

Geometry will be close to stock other than C.V. angles. But I’m making it fully adjustable so I can dial it in. I can build control arms no problem. Finding somewhere to shorten C.V. shafts without charging 1300.00 is the key

Do you shorten existing high performance shafts, or do you have some made for your application. Possibly the same difference. I'm guessing you'd have to spend a lot of time cross referencing every IRS produced for shaft length and compatible ends. Customizing can sometimes come with a cost and $1300.00 may be the price to pay for a narrowed IRS. I'd say keep looking for an off-the-shelf CV shaft that will work. Good luck!

I have searched and searched for a factory axel that will work with no luck.. Every shop that I have talked to wants to build new custom 4340 chromoly shafts and for what im doing i do not need that.. I did however find couple shops that will re spline my factory shafts for a couple hundred bucks plus shipping.. im probably going to go that route im just waiting to get my arms built to know exact size the shaft needs to be.. some parts came in the other day and im still waiting for a few more..

Interesting project. I don't know about what application you are using it for but their was an article in an issue of modified mustangs and fords a few years back where they put one of these in a comet station wagon. However, I don't believe they narrowed it but used different offset wheels to obtain the width they were looking for. You could probably find the article on Mustang 360 website. Good luck.

Couple of guys over at the Fairlane cub site did the 8.8" IRS swap, if i recall, out of a late Mustang, into a 63 Fairlane & as above, they found or had made 17" or 18" rims with a different offset to get the right fit.
That thread my still be running, will see if i can find it

It’s gout into a s10. Full custom tube frame s10. The stock third wheels won’t fit under the bed so that’s why I’m having to narrow it. I’m fixing to start on the arms. So it won’t be long before I can get some pics up
