Hi All
I'm thinking the timming jumped..I beleve its a 74 F-150 302cu. automatic
Drove it to the suppermarket shut it off now it don't start. Its getting gas, spark. But when I roll the motor over to TDC its a 1/2 a plug off or 6 deg. the rotor is pointing a whole plug wire off. how much Degree seperation is one plug wire to another in the cap??
Maybe give me the fireing order as well he has changed the cap and plugs but said he did them one wire at a time but they looked funny some were crossed up it looked like altho if I was to try to rotate them some wouldn't fit and didn't lay right.. It smelled rich so I told him to pull the plugs and see if they are wet and let them dry he may have flooded it as well.
Thanks
tim

One plug on the cap is 45 degrees. Sounds like a jumped chain.

Thanks guys
I'm sure its over 95T miles as it is a 74 and very, very grimey.. I couldn't realy see the mark but at the out most I had it a 10deg and it was a whole plug wire off.. So I'm thinking Chain. I'll see him most likely Thursday and see whats up so far. and I'll pull the #1 plug and check for TDC.
Thanks again guys

sounds like a chain to me as well. Especially if it had nylon gears.

It doesn't jump based on the wire it jumps based on the sprocket gears and there is a bunch more of them hence way less than 45 degrees. Any 302 with 100k on it will need a chain! Stu

Pull the cap, crank the motor and watch the rotor to see if is rotating smoothly.

How does the fireing order go on the block ( 74 302) is it
7 8 OR 4 8
5 6 OR 3 7
3 4 OR 2 6
1 2 OR 1 5

I don't recall..
Thanks
tim

OK
Pulled the #1 plug found TDC and the Rotor was a hole plug wire off.
The rotor turned very smothly so its not the dizzy gear so it must be the chain or gears. Right.
I also check fireing order and tried to see if I could move the wires (incase he messed up changing the cap) and they wouldn't fit anyother way..
OH and there is 91,000 miles on it so its colse enought to the 95,000 that was mentioned above. we figur it to be the chain..
Thanks for the help guys

I changed it in the parking lot of the station.. Wow.. He still accused me of Hotrodding it even though I was 40 and the chevy was 197? something...V-8
