I'm looking for a lil advise
I have a early bronco obviously not a race car or even a stop light fighter , but want something that will move when I want it to.
Currently it has a tired 302 , Holley 600 4 B , long tubes , Edelbrock performer .

Burns oils , I add Lucus to every fresh oil change which seems to help until the next oil change . I'm sure has many miles on it . Does not knock or sound bad I would run this motor until it was none but the lack of power has me wanting more . I know we all have that problem.

I came across a fresh 302 bored 30 I'm not sure of the work but a local shop rebuilt it with some upgrades I'm not sure exactly what was done but drove the vehicle it was installed it , motor sounded really good and had good power . I know this motor would be better then what I curently have but not that much more power to make me want to put it in today.

My question
Should I tear motor down and stroke it which I know is a big road, roller cam, heads at a minimum .

Or do something to the fresh 302 motor and find some more power , maybe heads and cam .... Which If I did buy some nice heads it my wake it up enough for my needs I see Edelbrock has a top end combo .... Or I don't have to have aluminum heads not really looking to save weight but looking for more HP any way .
Guys who may have does this ....were you happy with results ?

So just seeing what Yall think .....

the best way to increase the rate of acceleration.

there is no replacement for displacement.

if you stroke yours you do NOT need a roller cam . . you can just do a little work to stock heads and it will have much more power than a stock 302 will, however, if you have some money, the eddy e street heads are far better than stock ones and trick flows and ar's are even better but cost more than e streets.

good non roller cams for that app are the comp cams XE series and Lunati Voodoo series, and something around an xe262h with eddy e street heads and even just a 331 stroker will give you way more power than a stock or mildly modified 302.

You said it ... Money ... I have for a Top end kit or stroke it ... But at this time not both. I'm in no rush but eager to start something ..... Edelbrock claims there RPM performer kit will get me around 350 My gut is telling me pull the block apart take the money I have and do a stoker kit
On that note. Summit have Stroker ready blocks for 700-800. My last machine shop trip was 800 for boring , piston on rod and cam bearing So 800 to Summit sounds good

For a truck you need torque to get it moving and the 302 is lacking in that department. Stroking it will help a bunch but only if you can feed the extra cubes. Good flowing heads and intake and the proper camshaft are a must to get the most out of it. What gears and trans are you running?

C4. And stock 3.50 gears. My highway is about 2600 at 65. I don't want to loose that
That would have been my next advice is to move to a lower gear ratio. Since you don't want to do that adding more torque to the engine is the best idea. Especially torque on the lower end of the rpm scale which more cubic inches will bring.
A fresh 306 with some good heads and top end might be enough for you depending on just how tired your current engine is.

I had a early model Bronco (1974) a few years back. It had a mildly built 302 in it. Stock block, mild cam holly 4 600cfm and stock heads with long tube headers. It ran pretty nice. It also ran 3.50 gears and a c-4. The stud from the aircleaner came loose and went down the carb. It trashed the motor.I bought a used 5.0 roller motor short block. I went with a set of trick flow heads 2.02-1.60 Ford B cam .RPM airgap,650 holly. I was very pleased with this set up. It was not a race truck, but it hauled ass . It would break the tires loose in second hard. First gear you could smoke them. I used it as a daily driver for four years. You can pick some of these parts up here on the forum and save a lot of change. Roger

3.50 gears are fine. In order, here's what I would do...

Rebuild the engine
Add better heads/cam/intake
Stroker

At the very least, I'd do a nice rebuild with some good heads, cam and intake. This will give you a LOT more power than the worn out stocker. If you want to get carried away, get the stroker kit to go along with it.

That being said, I would NOT do a stroker kit unless you are also updating the heads, as they are too small for 302ci, and will be completely overwhelmed trying to feed a larger engine.

Good Luck!
