hi

i have a 70mach1,351c,4bbl.edelbrock mani,a/c,power brakes and power steering.
have been starting every two weeks no problems then all of the sudden a clicking from from right hand side of engine and the engine will not turn over.
does anyone have likely scenarios or things i can check.
right now i am thinking maybea new battery????
request help.

It sounds like a dead battery.
Put the battery on a trickle charger and see what happens. Or just take it to a parts store and have them test and recharge it for you.

If the problem is not the battery, next stop is the starter selinoid.
try crossing the terminals (with the car in park or in neutal if its a manual). If the starter spins its the selinoid. If the stater does not spin its the starter.

Charge Battery (never put them on layaway...)

Check Battery connections for cleanliness.

Check the solenoid for proper operation.

Check the starter for the same.

Check teh Altarnator to see if it's charging once started.

I'm pretty convinced it's simply a low battery form a failing alternator or a light left on somewhere in the car...

Best bet is a light left on then you don't' gotta spend any money :)

The Starter relay (or solenoid) will click if the battery is low but it usually goes click,click,click... very fast clicking when the battery is low. If it just clicks once then the relay is probably the culprit. You can find out by using a volt meter (multi-meter set on the first scale higher than 12v DC). Put the positive lead on the battery side and the negative lead on the starter side. Check the voltage when you try to start it (have someone else try to start it while you watch the meter) If it reads more than 0.5 VDC then the solenoid is bad - the chances are it will read nearly battery volts in your case. If it reads battery volts then it is not completing the circuit from the battery to the starter.
(NOTE: if the battery volts are lower than 12.1 (between the + and - posts then your battery should be charged before you test the solenoid)
If the battery volts drop to less than 9VDC when cranking (or trying to crank) then the battery is either dead or it has a very reduced capacity and needs to be replaced - you can tell which one by charging the battery and retesting.

I used to have that same engine in a Cougar. Sometimes it would do the click click click thing. It seemed like the battery but wasn't. I took the end of a screwdriver and gave the starter solenoid a few whacks and it started right up. Eventually put in a new solenoid and solved the problem. Just one scenario, but easily fixed. Also make sure your connections to the starter are nice and clean.

Usually the Click-click comes from the solinoid mounted to the inner fender area. Not the engine.

I then usually wire brush the battery terminals and the ends for the wries and retry withing one minute.

If it still goes on then with a meter look at how much output for the battery is. Your engine/battery charging system may not have given it a full load before it pooped out.
