I have built a few 302's I am actually getting ready to put together a 289 motor. I am looking for a rebuild kit, every kit I see says 289/302, the problem is the pistons are the same??? I thought the 289 piston was different than the 302 piston for some reason, I know the rod and crank is. I even went on Federal Mogul website and they are giving me s HP273 part #? Which is what I always use on the 302s.......

I have a "FORD PERFORMANCE" book by Pat Ganahl and it says the aftermarket 289 pistons will hit the crank if used in a 302.It says the skirts and pin boss area need to be milled slightly for clearance. The pistons they are using are TRW L-2218..I think the info is pretty dated though since they are using this piston because there were no flat tops available for a 302 at that time...I'm sure now that the 302/5.0 is so popular they just make the pistons to fit the 289 and 302.The info might still be true if your using old parts though.
