I'm just a bevy of questions today. I have a 67 Fairlane, C4 automatic with column shift, and power steering. The original 289 was worn out so I've taken it out to rebuild and put in a 302 out of a 78 F100. My question is what shorty headers would work with this setup? I've talked to Heddman and they have nothing that works with column shift. I was going to go with repro hipo manifolds, but the folks at Scott Drake say they will not work with a '78 302, so I'm feeling stuck with the stock logs.

That's odd. I have a set of Hedman Elite shorty headers (88408) on my 66 and they aren't anywhere near the column shift linkage for the C4. They are much closer to the accelerator linkage. This is with a 86-up 302 with Edelbrock Performer RPM heads. I installed a floor shifter for the C4, but I kept the linkages to the column to maintain the gear indicator operation on the column. I don't see why a 78 302 would be different.

Hooker may have some long tube headers that work.

It was the 88408s I was asking about. The rep said they didn't have any headers that worked with column shift. And I was more surprised by the Scott Drake person telling me that their repro Hipo manifolds wouldn't work with my '78 302. I didn't think there was a difference in the exhaust aspect between a 289 and 302 and that all carbureted 302s were pretty much the same.

I installed a Unisteer rack & pinion kit in my 66. The 88408 were listed in the instructions as being for a Ranchero, but I figured I could make them work as I was converting to a floor shift for the C4. As I said, there's plenty of room. I can send you some pictures if you'd like.

The 78 block may have a boss cast into it that interferes with the HiPo manifold. Like the Z-bar attachment for a clutch linkage.

You're probably right about the 78 block. And yeah, some pics would be great. Thank you!

Went ahead and took a chance and bought a set of Hedman 88408s. Fit fine with no problem with the linkage. However, the bottom of the header did rest on one of the hoses for the power steering. I had some flex pipe used to repair exhaust systems so I cut that into a shield to keep the header from resting directly on the hose. But I'm afraid that the heat may still degrade the rubber quickly so I'm wondering on a more permanent fix.

After some research, it seems that I will probably need to reroute my power steering hoses under the lower control arm to get them away from the header. Any tips or tricks to doing this? I thought about a lowering bracket for the pump but the headers aren't hitting the pump and I'm not sure that would move the hoses out of the way enough to help.

Years ago to use some Blackjack long-tube headers on my 67 Cougar. I had to buy a replacement bracket for where the power cylinder mount to the frame. It effectively changed the angle of the cylinder to increase the clearance.
