I just got the tranny bolted in last night with the new valve body. Anyone running one of the TCI reverse manual valve bodies? If so how do you like it ? Anything to watch for ? Engine braking? Anything you dont like?

I'm running a C4 with 6 red clutches in both drums and .030" clearances in both drums , rigid kevlar bands, "A" servo with small rubber ring removed and servo modified and hole pugged per the TCI instructions, 4000 stall converter, 6 pinion planetary, fully rollerized except the front take up thrust, hardened shaft etc.

I ran one a few years ago. It shifted forward fine but down shifting was VERY harsh. Going into reverse was VERY, VERY harsh. It would literally bang when you when into reverse. Not very comfortable on the street.

Just took it out for a drive with the reverse manual TCI VB. Ran well. No major banging going into reverse or bad downshifting. Definite "clunk" going into reverse but nothing really objectionable. I'm running the packs tight at .030" for 6 clutches and a 4000 stall . I am using 0W-20 mobil one synthetic motor oil. Don't know if that affects anything . Like you said. No engine braking in first and definite braking in 2nd and 3rd.

Down shifting doesn't do any major damage to clutches. When going from third to second all you are doing is applying the intermediate band while releasing the high clutches. When going from second to first the trans free wheels when the band releases. No engine braking and now clutch damage.

When starting out in high gear (if you forgot to down shift) the converter takes most of the hit. The high clutches are already engaged. The static clamping force is much better than the dynamic clamp that it gets on an upshift.

chipmechanic, it sounds like you've got a good shifting unit. My clutches were also set at .030" with 6 clutches in both drums. I also had the servo mod as per TCI instructions. I don't do that mod any more since I don't think it is nessessary. stock "H" servo works great.

I am having to pull my C4 out to change cases. I finally identified my fluid leak as a cracked case near the coolant boss. Anyway i have a TCI reverse manual valve body and I am going to be installing it into the new case as well . You said that you use stock H servos. I have a C servo with billet cover I'd like to use without plugging the vent hole in the case. Have you have any problem running the TCI valve body without the servo mods? I know they reccomend them but is it really necessary?

Thanks

I got your PM.

No you don't have to do the servo mod. Run it as it was intended from the factory and it will work great. The servo mod has become unpopular with me unless you have a small servo to start with.
