What is the best stock head for a 302?
I have a set of 1966 289 4 bbl heads and a set of 1987 302 HO heads.

BOSS 302 heads would work probably the best...if you find them. If not, I would use the 302 HO heads that you have.

I think the 289 heads out flow the E7 heads and they will bump up your compression some. Check out the head porting article in the archives it has flow charts for lots of small block heads.

If you use Boss 302 heads you have to make all kinds of mods to your engine and you would need a Boss intake and exhaust manifold.

Run the 289 heads because you will gain more compression because of the cc's!!! 1969 or 70 302 head because of the small cc's!! The only thing you gain from either head is compression!! Neither head has no bigger valves or flows better than the other!! The compression with the cc's is the difference!! And no, not a late model 302 head!!

I would run a stock pre-74 351W head. They are fairly plentiful and are basically a bolt on plus you get the benefit of a few less cc's and bigger valves.

If compression is the main concern the 68 302 4-v heads are only 53.5ccs. They only have normal 302 size valves though but lots of squeeze!

If your gonna go for a stock head, use the 69-74 351w heads. Port them out a bit (at least remove the egr bump). Just have them shaved to bring your compression up.
