brake light flash . . . what's up with that

just getting over the flu myself. went out to work on the '63 brake overhaul. anyway, i step on the brake with the old light switch . brakes flash. took mc off and installed the new light switch . brakes still flash. Now, this is a new phenomenon, as the brakes haven't flashed. with the new switch, i could press the brake pedal and the lights would come on and stay or they might flash. any advice on what's up. we jiggled the line when the lights did stay and nothing happened.
