I recently had a veteran mechanic rebuild a 351C w/2V heads and intake. I used the edelbrock conversion 2v to 4v intake to convert to a Edelbrock 750. My mechanic is a fan of stock rebuilds and only agreed to order a slightly lifted cam. Not certain what he ordered, but I'm certain the lift is just slightly above stock. Since the rebuild, I've had it in the body shop for about 6mos and will probably get it in a month or so. After that, new brakes, wheels, tires and exhaust.

My question is, with all of this "sitting" since the rebuild, (and I'm certain all the action the engine has seen was being started and moved) the engine will be about a year old before it is road tested. What precautions should I take to break the engine in? How would you break it in?

if has been started up at all recently, I don't think you would have to prime it, but I have been reading alot of stuff on using the GM EOS additive and Shell Rotella diesel oil to avoid destroying the cam.
I was told gentle break in, like 2,000 rpm for 15-20 minutes, and 500-1,000 miles of partial throttle driving. NO hammering it.
Asside from that, just check over stuff, check for leaks, etc.
Change the oil, and if you want, slice the filter open and inspect it.

First I'd change the oil and filter just because of all the dust in a body shop. Then just take it out and drive it. Nothing fast or easy either. Just drive it and change the oil and filter again at 1500 miles.

I've been building engines SUCESSFULLY since the age of 16....

After the initial Cam break in period and subsequent oil change.

Drive it like it's YOUR CAR.

If he used Iron Rings on the rebuild then the rings were seated during the break in of the cam. If they WERENT then it would run like crap...

If he used Moly rings then take it home and drive it like you own it. Chrome rings do not seat in a traditional way because they are HARDER than the substance that make up the cylindar walls, and the rings wear out the walls as time goes by, not the other way around like Iron rings.

Seriously guy's. If the motor was put to gether the right way then it's fine to go full throttle whenever you want.

If it was not, then you have problems with the builder's skills Stock rebuild or pure performance.

i have a 351 cleveland with aussie 4 valve heads and many other mods. the guy who helped me build the motor has been building clevelands since the eighties. he told me since it is not a solid cam and it is a hydralic that its 2000 rpms for twenty to thirty minutes. however, our brand new ignition box was bad and it took us a few hours to finally track down the intermittent erratic spark. that being said, all the time of having the starter cranking the motor at low speed wiped a lobe. not saying i know alot about it, but thats just my story.
