looks like my 402w needs to rehoned again, mark from panhandle performance has my heads and noticed that i was burning oil, i said its only 1500 miles new, said that some of these engine builders are using the wrong stones for honing out the cyclinders and that he see's that happening a lot lately, cant explain in detail but he knows his stuff, so im off again to ship it out to mark for a total rebuild and check the whole engine again, should have done this the first time, he's going to look at my shortblock and check it all out then rebuild it and dyno the motor when he's done, all i have to do is get it back and install the motor and run it, 3 times i did this motor, must be nj engine builders or something but i know mark will do me good, anybody want someone who knows engines this is the guy. should have 500 to 530 hp this time around.

Are you sure the oil is getting past the rings? It could be coming in through the PCV if you have one.
If you let the car sit and idle will it load up with oil and begin to smoke?
This could be due to high vacuum drawing oil into the engine past the valve seals. The black deposits could be oil or the engine just running rich.

no the manifold was on so good i couldnt get it off, im thinking like mark that i got some oil going past the rings into the cyclinders, intake valves are coated with black junk and the ex ports look burnt black??

at wot it did, needs to be rehoned with torque plates and then my pistons need to be coated because of clearance when they rehone, mark said he would fix her up but im not happy spending all this money again after 1500 miles.

Did you check leakdown? If you have a good seal, you may not need to tear it apart.

Did you look at the valve seals? You could be sucking some past the guides, but that's usually in high vacuum situations, not high load WOT running.

Are you getting detonation? (almost a sure sign the rings are bad)

Cheap old Telegraph Rd. trick: Take a straw and blow a McDonalds coffee stirrer's worth of Comet or Zud cleanser into the cylinder. The abrasive will re-set the rings for a while. If it clears up from that, then you have the answer.

Dunno what shape your block was in, but sometimes strokers put a lot of load on the thrust side of the bore, and if it was thin, that could play hell with ring seal and cause some of the blow by.

Good luck

Whoops! Forgot one thing: what kind of oil do you use?

If you are using a Royal Purple or equivalent, the friction modifiers, etc, will not allow the rings to break in properly.

You could try changing to a mineral base oil and see what happens.

Good luck!

FWIW,i had a problem afew years ago with my engine smoking bigtime at wot, intake manifold was sealing really well i thought, and the back of the intake valve was covered in black gunk.turned out that after the block had been decked and the heads cleaned up oil was being sucked up between the manifold and heads.just sounds like your symptoms are very similar to what i had going on

mark at panhandle performance said it looks like the rings were not seating, cyclinder walls have to be rehoned and pistons coated, he is doing my whole motor over again and then dyno it, not really sure what going on but the motor has 1500 miles new, just done last yr or so, heads are brand new roush200 heads, wierd stuff with these strokers i almosy want to go back to my 351w motor that i saved , new block is ford sportsman A-351. done this 3 times since new, this is getting old fast.

Done this 3 times since new??? Something smells fishy here... and if you have been using a "correct" oil, it sounds more like the hone finish is incorrect OR the "running in" procedure is incorrect (if you are running in).

YEA THATS WHAT MARK AT PANHANDLE SAID TOO, HONE JOB GONE BAD, POSTED THIS ON OTHER FORUMS WITH THE SAME ANSWER, MY ENGINE BUILDERS SAID I WAS NUTS AND DIDNT KNOW WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT?, ANYWAY LOOKS LIKE I NEED A REBUILD AT 1500 MILES, WHEN THE MOTOR WAS JUST DONE MY ENGINE GUY TOOK ME OUT INTO THE PARKING LOT NEAR HIS SHOP AND DROVE THE CAR W.O.T. 2 TIMES, SAID HE HAD TO BREAK IN THE RINGS?? DOES THAT SOUND RITE??.

how do i check for either burned gas deposits or oil? im thinking it might be carb related, black junk on the .ex ports come off it you wipe it with your finger, kind of dry black soot, anybody know the differance between the two?.

If its black anb wipes off it sounds like oil, though it could also mean over fueling....my bet is on oil deposits. IF you suspect you are over fueling, this is also bad for a fresh hone job and washes the cylinder walls and the rings won't bed properly.
The BEST way to bed the rings is not in the parking lot or on the dyno for that matter.....on the "road" is best.
The best way is WOT then let it "coast", then repeat 3 or 4 times.
The WOT loads the rings against the cylinder walls.
The "coasting" generates alot of vacuum in the engine, this vaccum sucks the micro pieces of metal that come off a fresh hone job out the exhaust.
DON'T do the old "ajax" (or related scouring products) down the carb trick, it does work but it also gives your ring lands hell.
