I used that cam for a long time in a 302 but for your 347, I would recommend the next cam up the list. "284" It has more lift and duration. I think would work well. I use this cam in my race only 302 Mustang. It runs low 12's.

I agree...I have the 274 XE cam in my modified 351w and I don't feel it's enough. In retrospect, I think I should have gone with the 284 or even the next one above that one.....the 294XE I think it is.
What is your compression ratio? If you have a fairly low CR, going with a cam with more duration would hurt more than it helped.
If your CR is at least 10:1 or higher then I say go with the 284 or 294XE
That's my 2 cents......

I used the XE 274 roller in my 347 and it made great power. 430hp/460tq on the engine. Works great for my street car.. and you can forget about rice with that motor!!!

I think he's talking about the flat tappet grind which has totally different specs compared to the roller version.
The flat tappet specs are: 274*/284* .519/.523 110*LSA

You combo will work with the "274". One thing I would change is your rear end gearing. You could run alot more gear with your overdrive. A daily driver, I would not go over 3.50 ratio. 2.73's are what is killing your current performance. The car can't get out of its own way until you build some rpm.

Yeah, you can definatly go more than 3:55 gears with a 5 speed. 4:10's or maybe 4:30's depending on how often and far you drive it.
As mentioned above, you WILL need more gear and a posi-traction rear end. Also, forget about traction at the track with just street tires if you get those gears. You will need slicks for sure!....not drag radials.

you guys are not reading the gear ratios-my 1st gear is 11.11:1 thats the same as 3.73 x 2.95 (first gear for most 5.0"s) see mine is 2.73 x 4.07 .3.73x2.95=11.00,so my effective gear ratio is STEEPER than 3.73 now,my goal is 5700 rpm shifts race thru the first 3 gears the get out of it ,nothig organized just improptu gran prix on I-5 (and SR512 hint)

i agree, the 274 is a good cam for a daily driver.im using it in a 351 and it makes plenty of power,if it wasnt a street car i would have gone bigger but i wanted that tyre roasting torque, and the 274 works well

Hi guys, Sorry to but in to this discussion,

I was also thinking of using the Xe274 cam for my 351c 4V engine. Its going to be backed with a 4Speed Toploader.
Can I get an opinion on having it ground at 108LSA?
I will have 11.0:1 Comp, 780 Holley, 4 into 1 pipes, with a dual 3inch and x crossover pipe. 3.5:1 diff gears.

I am aiming to achieve 380HP, with some tyre frying torque.

Whats your thoughts?

Cheers Spaz
