On my brand new 351w engine (only around 9.5:1 ocmpression) when I shut it off, it usually diesells. How can I stop this? its really embarassing. I am running 92octane... The cam is a 230/240duration if that matters, with 58cc afr 185cc heads

One more thing, I tried downing the timing a few degress, and then when I give it a bit of gas, it backfires through the carb, so I can't retard it anymore. I think it needs to be advanced maybe?

What is your idle speed? If it's too high, it will cause this problem. Try knocking it down 100 rpms or so, and see what happens.

Worse case scenario, hook up one of those 'old fashioned' electric kicker motors, to step up the idle when the key is on.
Good/quick fix. (cheap too).

I figured it out. It was the carb, i've never owned one of those holley 4bbl double pumpers with 4 idle screws. they were all off. way off. The thing runs like a raped ape now, i've never burned out in 2nd gear. Wow that was great...
