I know the stated way to check transmission oil is hot and idling. I would like to check mine in the morning, before taking off. I see then it is 3 inches higher on the stick than the Full mark. Is there a reason why I couldn't just use that for a measure?

I would say you could in a general sense, but not a specific check. The reason I say this is because the fluid is high enough engine-off to be greatly affected by slosh to the tailshaft housing or not, depending on the exact car angle. This could throw your measurement off by quite a bit. So, I'd say if you always park it at home in the same spot and angle, and it's just a morning check (with other specific "hot" checks on a regular basis), then it can't hurt just to verify you don't have a serious problem and you have enough fluid to get to the store. ;)
