While putting on my new damper, I stripped the crank

Is it OK to drill out and heli-coil the crank? I already tried re-tapping it... but it stripped another bolt.
ARGHHHHHHHHH
Thanks!

I've don eit on a 440 and on a 396 and on a 350, but I don't recommend it... They want about 80 to 100 Ft. lbs. on those damn things...
The reason you shouldn't do it is because of the shortness of the Heli-coil and the amount of torque necessary. It's better to tap and thread up to another size. Usually you should find a suitable Metric bolt just a little bigger than the one in the crank and tap it to that after just barely shaving down the threads that are left, I say Metric because going to one higher standard bolt can be a big jump in thickness... and the metric bolt just might make it easier...

You might be able to get an extra long heil coil and they will hold as much as the reagular thead, But to drill it out to the STI insert thread size and then tap it properly youll need a machine shop and the crank has to come out. You might get lucky and get a metric bolt that will work but thats going to take some research and also A metric tap of the right size. Also if its too big youll need to drill the hole out to accept the metric size and here we are again to the machine shop.
Considering the damage that can be caused by a damper coming loose at freeway speeds changing out the crank is a bargin.
Thats what I would do. Sorry to say.
Good luck man,Robert

I smell a 347

Of course a last resort, but if the crank has to go.. it has to go!

Hell just swap out a bored n stroked 454 dart tall deck windsor BEAST!
Should only run you around $15000 ! HAHAHA
seriously Though if you have "stock" balance on the assy then you could just drop the pan and shove a "rebuilt" unit back in there just to get you by.
Good luck

I KNEW IT! I KNEW YOU'D JUST NEED ANY EXCUSE!

seriously, that sucks. did the same (stripped the first 1/2 inch or so) but was able to salvage it by getting a longer bolt as its threaded quite a ways into the snout.... sounds like you may havego to a larger bolt and rethread.... hope it works out.

I have drilled and tapped crank bolts out to size bigger metric/us, or what ever several times on different makes and models. Never had a problem.

I'd helicoil it too. Then locktite everything together. Should be OK for normal driving.

Next time use a balancer installer. Cheap and you won't have this problem.
