Just a quick question; if I want to install a 1978 302 crankshaft into a 1987 5.0L roller block, aside from having to use the 28oz. imbalance equipment, is there anything else I have to do? I've heard that it is necessary to machined off the lip on the rear main seal journal....is this true? It seems like there will be ample clearance in the 87 block and main cap for the lip on the older crankshaft.

Found out the scoop; the lip has to be ground off in order for the crank to fit in the block properly. It really has nothing to do with the seal as it doesn't sit as far back on the journal as the lip is located.

Just grind off the lip. That's it...everything else will work.

I just either use a bench grinder or an old block with a couple bearings....and have someone spin the crank in the block while I use a angle grinder to grind down the lip. You don't have to take it all the way off. Just grind it down about halfway and you're done.
